The Bank of England (@bankofengland) is working with banks on how to restore critical financial services after severe cyberattacks, as advances in AI raise concerns about financial system resilience.
Deputy governor Sarah Breeden told the Institute of International Finance (@IIF) annual meeting in Bangkok that banks need to prepare for attacks that penetrate their defenses. Disrupted payments and account access could affect businesses and households.
One approach is bare metal recovery: rebuilding compromised systems from a clean foundation, reinstalling applications and restoring verified data. Protected backups, clean recovery environments and checks on recovered records are central to this work.
The Bank is also surveying firms on quantum-related risks to encryption, alongside guidance from the UK's National Cyber Security Centre (@ncsc). Banks are being encouraged to plan for quantum-resistant cryptography and assess dependencies on technology suppliers.

Global trade is being reshaped, with new routes, relationships and growth opportunities redefining globalisation.
At the Institute of International Finance (@IIF) Annual Membership Meeting in Bangkok, our President, International, Ben Hung, joined senior banking leaders to discuss what this shift means for businesses navigating geopolitical uncertainty, changing trade patterns and supply-chain realignment.
The conversation, which took place alongside the International Monetary Fund (@IMFNews) and World Bank (@WorldBankGroup) Annual Meetings, explored how new opportunities are emerging across fast-growing corridors, including China–ASEAN, intra-ASEAN, India and the Middle East, and Africa–China, as companies rethink where they manufacture, source and sell.
“Fragmentation does not necessarily mean there isn’t going to be any growth coming through…[it] is simply redefining globalisation in a different way,” Ben told the panel.
For financial institutions, the priority is to help clients navigate these changing patterns, and turn greater complexity into more resilient approaches to trade, investment and funding.
As a leading international bank, we connect corporate and institutional clients to a network that offers unique access to long-term growth opportunities across Asia, Africa and the Middle East, Europe and the Americas.
