It is heartening to see the cross-community response to this incident, highlighting that the people of Derry remain steadfast in their determination to ensure that their vibrant City can be a peaceful, positive and reconciled home place for all. 2/2
Derry at Halloween is a place of festival for locals and tourists alike. To target a local business in an area beside a funfair during the school break is utterly shocking. I condemn this reckless and senseless act perpetrated by those with nothing to offer to their community 1/2
My thoughts are with the people of Spain following the tragic train accident in Toledo province today. Our deepest condolences to the families of the victims. My Department, including our Embassy in Madrid, stands ready to provide consular assistance should it be needed.

Congratulations to the 181 members of the Irish Defence Forces who received academic awards at South East Technological University’s annual conferring ceremony in Carlow on 27th of October.
This achievement reflects the dedication, commitment and determination of our personnel in balancing academic study with their professional careers.
The long-standing partnership between SETU and the Defence Forces continues to support lifelong learning, professional development and the knowledge and skills needed to meet Ireland’s evolving defence and security challenges.

I received Ireland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade, @HMcEntee, and thanked her for Ireland’s contribution to UNIFIL and the sacrifices made by its soldiers. I informed her that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to follow up on the case of the Irish soldier who lost his life in an attack, with a view to ensuring that those responsible are held accountable.
We agreed on the need to maintain an international presence in southern Lebanon, and I raised the question of the role the European Union could play in this regard, given Ireland’s current presidency of the EU.
I expressed our concerns over the risk of Lebanon being drawn into another war by Hezbollah at Iran’s behest. I also reiterated the need for Israel to withdraw and cease its attacks, and referred to the government’s decisions to establish exclusive state control over weapons and prohibit Hezbollah’s military and security activities. I stressed the crucial role of the Lebanese Armed Forces and the importance of supporting them in fulfilling their mission.

Helen McEntee:
I welcome today’s Council decisions to mobilise €4.9bn for Ukraine through the European Peace Facility.
This will reimburse aid and strengthen EU training and capacity building efforts.
