Three thoughts on what really matters:
1. Fuck cancer
2. Friends are irreplaceable
3. The new "Marcus test" for AI is when AI makes a significant dent on cancer
May that happen sooner, much sooner, rather than later.
In memory of my childhood friend Paul.
yep you made jensen rich at your own expense
it is a sorry indictment of what X has become that my feed is overflowing with angry insults from poor readers who literally cannot tell the difference between
a. a criticism of Elon
and
b. a criticism of a misleading comment about Elon
elon’s fans are the most butthurt human beings i have ever encountered.
even when i am not actually criticizing him (but just correcting a misleading statement about him), they cannot help but resort to insult
and never address the facts
are all cults like this?
boom, there it is.
or perhaps i should say, “bust, there it is”
all this insanity about demand and there are literally warehouses of idle GPUs.
Business Insider confirms it: Amazon has warehouses of GPUs that can’t be installed, and is buying them so far in advance that a supply chain team said they “didn’t have a clear forecasted path” to installing them.

if people around here could learn to read and write carefully, @edzitron and I would have a lot less work to do. 🤷♂️
what i have been saying since August 2023: AI returns aren’t enough to justify the expense.
so far, anyway, the numbers have not proven me wrong.
“.. At the moment, we have more compute capacity than we have demand, and we have a lot of the tokens and processing power being given away in freemium solutions,” he told @CNBC. “Everyone in the AI race is running for a last-man standing position.”

Do you know what this is?
This is the same method used to turn a lot of us into social media zombies, obsessed with posting, and earning money in that manner.
It’s called “I want to make you dependent on my company. I want you to need the success of my business, because you are financially dependent on it to survive. And I can turn it off whenever I want. You are my indentured servants.”
Do you know what’s next? Anthropic and all the other companies with big AI models will replace the government. Not because they took the gov over, but because the public became financially dependent on the AI companies, and also capitulated their decision making to ChatGPT, Claude, and the rest of the idiotic “AI Agents.” The public will simply start obeying the AI systems because they financially and emotionally and intellectually rely on them.
It’s pretty serious. Our systems and our government will be usurped by tech bros running tech companies. And we will have zero representation. We will be indentured slaves.
It’s not for me.
cannot believe how hostile @jason was to my simple statement of facts.
he didn’t rebut or even address the facts; he just attacked me personally.
bottom of the wonderful @paulg pyramid.
the context i offered still stands.
let’s have some perspective here, @altcap
even if Elon actually carries through with this (not a guarantee) he will have given away less than 2% of his fortune, which is an order of magnitude less than Bill Gates has.
in absolute dollars it would be a fifth of what Buffet has given away.

Anthropic is trying to rescue the Nscale IPO protect their own.
Standard disclaimer applies: much like all the other deals previously announced, Anthropic doesn’t have the money.
*NSCALE, ANTHROPIC IN TALKS FOR $45 BILLION CLOUD COMPUTING DEAL
Anthropic said to be in talks for second building at Nscale's Monarch building - deal may happen in the coming days. Interesting timing to say the least

Anthropic's leaked AI bill is weak, fails to meet the moment, and makes the company's safety-first pitch ring hollow.
The visceral negative reaction from across the AI safety community is, in some ways, evidence of a sense of betrayal: that the company that was supposed to be committed to their cause has, like all the others, let business interests win.

LLMs can mimic thought and feeling with uncanny skill, but intelligence alone is not enough for subjective experience

Literally, none of this makes any sense. They’re always telling us AI is gonna create these incredible futures, but how exactly? They never say. How is AI gonna double everybody’s lifespan within two years? This is just fraud at this point.
Dario Amodei: We may be only two or three years away from AI systems being better than humans at almost all tasks.
“I call it a country of geniuses in a data center.”
“Imagine tens of thousands of geniuses, smarter than a Nobel Prize winner across many fields.”
“They could cure diseases and extend the human lifespan.”
“I wouldn’t be surprised if we were able to double the human lifespan.”
“They may even build robots for themselves and project themselves into the physical world.”
“There are all kinds of questions around the balance of power.”
