The market for credit is failing SMEs in Canada. Credit is harder to come by for SMEs and more expensive when they come by it. Read our submission to the Competition Bureau, which outlines how to fix our broken market for credit: buff.ly/14bR2Lq #SmallBusinessMonth

Canadians pay higher fees for everyday banking than citizens of Australia and the United Kingdom do and they get less in return. Canada’s financial sector is heavily concentrated. Over the years, the UK and Australia have boosted competition in their financial sectors.

Meanwhile, Canada is still suffering from the problems boosting competition would fix: high fees and poor customer service. This year’s federal budget should make financial services more affordable for Canadians. buff.ly/0VPKEcN

According to the C.D. Howe Institute, the financial sector’s contribution to Canada’s productivity is “underwhelming.” The financial sector is not just a vault for your money. It’s the economy’s brain, deciding how to allocate capital across the economy.

SMBs make up more than 99 percent of the Canadian economy, but they’re not getting access to the financing they need to grow. Banks are lending less to SMBs than to bigger firms. And when banks do lend to SMBs, it costs SMBs more here than it does in other countries.

This year’s federal budget should make it easier for SMBs to access capital and invest in themselves and the Canadian economy. For more, check out the blueprint we sent to the government: buff.ly/0VPKEcN

The Canadian economy should be powered by Canadian dollars. But alternative payment infrastructure denominated in foreign currency could weaken financial supervision and policy administration at home. Digital currencies like stablecoins are gaining traction.

Global stablecoin volume is on the rise, with trillions of such transactions taking place annually. More and more of the payment companies that power commerce today are giving their merchants the ability to accept payments in stablecoins.

This year’s federal budget should protect Canada’s economic security by modernizing financial sector legislation to apply to stablecoins. For more, check out the blueprint we sent to the government: buff.ly/0VPKEcN

It was a pleasure to speak at the Future of Finance Summit in Toronto about the need for investment, competition and innovation in the financial technology space. Canada needs financial modernization from Real Time Rail to open banking and digital assets to compete globally. Canada must remove barriers and build a framework that capitalizes on Canadian talent and makes us an innovator in financial technology, not a follower. Thank you to @FintechsCanada @creativedlab and @web3canada for inviting me and hosting this important conference.

The Bureau’s study on SME loans is an important step toward a fairer financing landscape. But as our Executive Director noted, Canada must move forward on open banking & RTR to expand access to capital, lower borrowing costs, & level the playing field. buff.ly/JrcG2Xt
