My reply to Andrej Karpathy on just-in-time understanding, with a six-minute clip from the film.
Replying to @karpathy
Andrej, I like this ladder. I do all my computer work by voice now.
I think video is a better form than we've had before, in most circumstances. My sense is that the final form is whatever experience, generated for you at the right time and in your context, adapts your existing understanding into the correct new understanding.
I'm developing an approach I call just-in-time understanding. Starting from my goals, it works with me to identify and extract the target, given what I already know, where my gaps are and how I learn best. Then it aims to anticipate what I'll need and deliver the experience that results in understanding, fitted to where I'll be (driving, on a run, with family, in a classroom), what else needs my attention, and which of my senses are free. The form might be a video, a spoken back-and-forth, a diagram, an interactive simulation, a game, a puzzle or practice with feedback. I unpack this a bit more in the film.
My sense is that most of the friction comes from too many new mappings at once. When an experience maps onto what I already know and adds one new connection, adopting it is easy. So mapping my existing understanding of a topic is an essential part of adapting the delivery: what to provide, in what form, and how specifically I'll need to recall or use it later.
We usually measure the artifact: the video or the page. This shifts the point of reference to the person. So the measurement moves from the delivery to the human's ability to internalize and demonstrate understanding. My proposed check is what I can explain or apply on a new case, before I need it. Part of the measurement is also how well the system works with me to identify and extract that target.
Like in The Matrix: Neo says, “I know kung fu.” Morpheus says, “Show me.” You can understand something you can't yet show, but until we can measure the brain and body directly, showing it is how I propose to measure it.
I'm working on benchmarks. One tests whether I can apply something I couldn't apply before, on a new case, in time to use it. A public one would compare AI systems by what people can explain or apply afterward. They're in development, with no results yet.
And where understanding falls short, there's room to optimize the system. So it's about the experience that results in understanding. That's the target I'd like to set for the industry.

We’re committing a portion of Anthropic’s shares to the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, a new wholly owned entity dedicated entirely to the public benefit.
It will start off with 5% of our shares. For every 50% increase in the company’s value over a set baseline, we can contribute up to an extra 2%, subject to our board’s discretion.
In total, this means that roughly 20% of Anthropic’s shares are committed to the public good. Our co-founders have already pledged to donate 80% of their equity, and around half our employees are donating a portion of their equity as part of a donation matching program we’ve run since our founding.
In the post below, we share more details about our new fund.

Claude Code mods change how Claude Code looks and behaves. They are functions that hook into events, change what it does, and can draw their own UI in the terminal.
This one holds risky shell commands so you can see what it would delete.

New from our STEM Fellows Program: Designing more efficient quantum circuits with Claude.
Given plain-language instructions, Claude Mythos 5 designed quantum circuits that improve on the best published ones, sometimes by an order of magnitude or more.
More efficient circuits reduce the resources needed by quantum algorithms, which could bring quantum computing applications in chemistry and materials science within reach sooner.

Maybe we should start a competitor to Amazon 🤔
amazon is blocking grok @bots from ordering, and elon's answer is just have your bot buy it somewhere else.
one of my grok bots only handles my amazon returns, so i'm watching this one closely.
would you switch stores for your bot? 🛒
Elon, i think its time for an X Shop? 👀

New in Claude Code: idle compaction
The prompt cache lives 1h. Leave a 200K+ token session idle ~54 min and it gets auto-compacted, so you come back to a warm summary, not a cold re-cache.
Set the Threshold: CLAUDE_CODE_IDLE_COMPACT_MIN_TOKENS
Turn Off: "idleCompaction": false

Code Review is now generally available for Claude Team and Enterprise plans.
Reviews are now faster, catch more of the bugs that matter, and admins can pick from Quick, Standard, or Deep review levels for each repo.

Working out how best to use AI in mathematics research—and in science more generally—will take time, effort, and resources. We’re eager to support mathematicians as they drive scientific progress and define the future of their field.
We’ve committed $5 million of funding, compute, and Claude access to help the math community navigate the massive changes that AI brings. We’re partnering with @SimonsFdn, who will manage the award through a community-driven approach, supporting workshops, conferences, and lectures by domain experts.

Opus 5.5 fast mode in the Claude Platform is no longer in research preview, and we’ve removed the waitlist!
It’s the same Opus 5.5 but up to 2.5x faster, at $8 / $40 per million tokens.
It's also available in Microsoft Foundry (Hosted on Azure), with Google Cloud coming soon.
Fast mode in Claude Code remains unchanged, and uses extra usage credits.

Applications are now open for two new Anthropic Fellowships.
STEM Fellows (science and engineering) and Conceptual Reasoning Fellows (philosophy, cognitive science, economics, policy, and law) will spend four months at Anthropic from January 2027, working to help Claude reason well about some of the hardest problems in those fields.
For more information, see the descriptions below. The application deadline is October 28.

It does mean that Claude continues from a summary instead of your full context though. You can turn it off with "idleCompaction": false in settings.json, and you can set a custom threshold (default is 200k) with CLAUDE_CODE_IDLE_COMPACT_MIN_TOKENS

We recently added idle compaction to Claude Code!
It now compacts long idle sessions right before the prompt cache expires (~1h). If you come back to it later, it only has to reprocess the summary instead of the entire conversation, which saves you some usage.
