In 1941, a Spaniard walked into the British embassy in Madrid and offered to spy on the Nazis. The British turned him down. So he went to the Germans instead, pretended to be a loyal fascist, and got hired as a German spy. His plan was to lie to them for the rest of the war. It worked better than anyone could have imagined. His name was Juan Pujol García. Before the war he had tried his hand at running a chicken farm and a movie theater. He had no spy training. What he had was a deep hatred of both fascism and communism after the Spanish Civil War, and an incredible imagination. The Germans gave him a codename, invisible ink, money, and orders to go to Britain and recruit spies. He didn't go to Britain. He went to Lisbon, Portugal, and made everything up. Using a tourist guidebook, maps, magazines, newsreels, and a British railway timetable from the library, he wrote long, detailed reports about life in England. Military movements. Morale. Ports. He'd never been there. He made mistakes. He didn't understand British money. He once reported that dockworkers in Glasgow would do anything for a liter of wine. The Germans loved him anyway. Then British codebreakers reading German messages noticed something strange. The Germans were hunting for a convoy that didn't exist, based on a report from some agent in Britain they'd never heard of. The British went looking for this mystery spy. They found Pujol. In 1942 they finally took him on and brought him to London. Now he had real help. MI5 gave him the codename Garbo, after the actress, because they thought he was the greatest actor in the world. Together with his British handler, Pujol built a fake spy network for the Germans. It eventually had 27 imaginary agents. Each had a name, a personality, a job, and a backstory. A Welsh nationalist. A Venezuelan student. A Greek sailor. Some of them recruited their own imaginary sub-agents. When they needed to explain why one agent had gone quiet, they killed him off. They even put a fake obituary in a Liverpool newspaper. The Germans reportedly paid a pension to his widow. Who also didn't exist. Then came D-Day. Hours before the landings, the British let Pujol send a message warning the Germans that the invasion was coming in Normandy. It was timed so it would arrive too late to matter, but it made him look brilliant. Three days later he sent the most important message of his career. Normandy was a trick, he said. The real invasion was still coming, at Calais, led by a huge army under General Patton. That army was fake too. But the Germans believed him. German forces that could have been rushed to Normandy were held back near Calais for weeks, waiting for an attack that never came. The Germans were so grateful they awarded him the Iron Cross. A few months later, King George VI made him a Member of the Order of the British Empire. He's one of the only people known to have been decorated by both sides of the war. After the war, afraid of revenge from surviving Nazis, he faked his own death from malaria in Africa and disappeared to Venezuela, where he lived quietly running a shop. For decades the world thought he was dead. In 1984, a British writer tracked him down. Pujol came back to Normandy for the 40th anniversary of D-Day and met veterans who had landed on the beaches. Some of them thanked him.

Well said Sacha. RIP Pat
RIP Councillor Pat Karney. In 2006, when I came up with the idea of The Warehouse Project, it was laughed off. Pat believed in it and helped it happen. A visionary. A pioneer. A true Mancunian. #RIPPatKarney

🚨🎙️ Roy Keane on JJ Gabriel demanding a seven-figure salary to stay at Manchester United: 🔴💣 “Honestly, I find this whole situation embarrassing for Manchester United. We’re talking about a 16-year-old boy who hasn’t established himself in the first team, yet the club is apparently discussing seven-figure money just to convince him to stay. What has happened to football? If a young player is already making demands like this before he has kicked a ball properly at senior level, then maybe his mind is somewhere else. And if Manchester United are begging him to stay, that tells you everything about the way the club is being run. United have produced plenty of talented youngsters over the years who never became stars. Talent is one thing. Proving yourself at the highest level is another. You don’t hand out enormous contracts because someone might become a superstar one day. A million pounds or more for a 16-year-old? For doing what exactly? Winning youth matches? Scoring goals against kids his own age? Come on. Earn it first. Manchester United need to stop acting desperate. If the boy genuinely wants to leave, open the door and let him go. No player, especially a 16-year-old, should be bigger than Manchester United. The club needs standards again. You don’t beg young players to stay. You make them desperate to play for Manchester United.”

This is Dieter Schwarz - the owner of Lidl, the richest man in Germany, one of the richest people in the world. Only two known photos exist of him, zero video footage, and he's never given an interview. He is an extremely dedicated philanthropist, having put billions mostly into educational causes. He lives in Heilbronn, in Germany, and has transformed the area into an educational/tech/research hub, as well as funding educational activities at Oxford, HEC Paris, Stanford and many others. Technically, he doesn't actually own Lidl any more, as he set up 'The Dieter Schwarz Foundation' - a charity - which owns the Schwarz Group, the parent company of Lidl. In other words, Lidl is owned by a charity that ploughs lots of money into educational causes - and yet Lidl never use any of that in advertising. One of the most successful, interesting people on earth, and nobody even knows what he looks like any more.

🚨 Kobbie Mainoo on the message David Beckham sent him: 🗣️ Kobbie Mainoo: “David messaged me after one of our games and I honestly didn’t know what to say at first. “He said, ‘Kobbie, I’ve been watching you. You’ve got something United players are supposed to have you don’t look scared of the shirt.’ “I thanked him and thought that was the end of it. “Then another message came. “He said, ‘I keep hearing people compare you with midfielders from the past. Scholes, Carrick, even me sometimes. Don’t listen to it.’ “I replied, ‘Why not?’ “He said, ‘Because the moment you start trying to become someone else, you stop becoming the player you’re supposed to be.’ “Then he said something that really caught me. “‘You’re playing for Manchester United at a time when everyone is desperate for the next superstar. Don’t rush to become one. Just become the player your team needs.’ “I asked him, ‘What would you do if you were me?’ “He replied, ‘Ask for the ball when everyone else is hiding.’ “That message stayed with me. “And then he finished with, ‘One more thing, Kobbie. If you ever score a goal that wins a big game at Old Trafford, don’t celebrate like you’ve made it.’ “‘Celebrate like you’ve just started.’ “I screenshotted that message. “Because when someone like David Beckham talks to you about Manchester United, you listen.”

🚨🎙️ Wayne Rooney on JJ Gabriel’s transfer request to leave Manchester United: 🗣️"Look, JJ Gabriel is an absolute talent — anyone who’s watched him in the academy knows how special he is. He’s got that raw ability, that flair, and the kind of potential that doesn’t come around often. Naturally, as a Manchester United fan and someone who played for this club for a long time, you want to see a player like him stay, develop, and eventually shine at Old Trafford. But if it's true that he’s asking to leave and his head is elsewhere, you have to look at the bigger picture. We’ve been down this road before, If a player’s mind isn't in it anymore, you can try to convince him, but you’ll never get 100% commitment on the pitch. In that situation, provided all terms and conditions are met and the deal is right for the club, I think you have to let him go. You only want players at Manchester United who fully want to be here and fight for the badge."

🚨🎙️Valdas Dambrauskas (Sabah FK coach) on Micheal Carrick's words to him after the final whistle: 🗣️“First of all, I’d love to say it’s a real honor for me to be here, playing against Manchester United. This is a moment I’ll remember for the rest of my life.” “Carrick is a really young and experienced coach. He has already taught me a lot from this game, just by the way he managed his team.” “After the final whistle, he came to me and simply said, ‘It’s an honor to play against your team.’” “I honestly didn’t know what to say. You’re standing there after playing against Manchester United, and the manager of that club is showing you that kind of respect.” “He didn’t have to say those words. He could have just walked away, but he came to me.” “That is what football should be about. Competition for 90 minutes, respect for a lifetime.” “I came here hoping to learn something. I’m leaving with memories I’ll never forget.”

The one and only time Spike Milligan made me laugh
I make absolutely no apology for the fact that I posted this before. In fact, I’ll probably post it again in another six months. God knows, we need silly like never before. It is, of course, the eternal Spike Milligan (with the help of John Bluthal and David Lodge, etc) taking the rise out of Wagner's Ring Cycle in what for my money is one of the funniest sketches ever committed to film. The song, by the way, was a hit in the 1930's for a chap called Jack Hodges and is called Everything is Fresh Today. Good morning.
