No “Gaming”, TV.
The new Apple TV 4K isn't a TV box. It's a game console, and Apple isn't even selling it that way. 🎮
Apple has spent years laying the groundwork for gaming. The iPhone is already one of the biggest gaming platforms in the world, and not just because of Apple Arcade but also because of third-party titles. Mac and iPhone now run almost the same games, porting between them keeps getting easier for developers, and Metal makes everything look great.
On top of that, Apple has two devices nobody else has: Vision Pro and Apple TV 4K. The Apple TV is the interesting one right now. It was just refreshed with an A19 chip, 128GB of storage and a $300 price tag.
The problem is that $300 is expensive for a streaming box and cheap for a console. If Apple sells it as a TV box, most people already have a smart TV with the Apple TV app built in. If it sells it as an entry point to gaming, the price makes total sense.
That A19 is the same chip as the iPhone 17 (the regular one, not the Pro). I've played Assassin's Creed and the latest Resident Evil games on it (also No man’s Sky is coming to the iPhone!), and they look fantastic. On a TV they should shine.
Picture this: you play Resident Evil on your Apple TV with any controller you want. Mine would be a Backbone or a Razer Kishi. You leave the house, plug the Backbone into your iPhone and keep playing the same save. You get to the office, sit down at your Mac and pick it up there. No other ecosystem gives you that with its own hardware.
What's missing isn't hardware, it's games. Apple needs more big third-party releases beyond Apple Arcade, more out of its Sony partnership, and real exclusives for Vision Pro.
The 128GB of storage? Shows on Apple TV stream, so that space is for games. It's not enough for a huge library of AAA titles, but it's plenty to rotate through them: download, finish, delete.
Apple is in a great position to go big in gaming. But if it wants to justify $300, it has to tell people that A19 is there for gaming. Right now its website barely mentions it.
