i think this is precisely right. the actual economy (not the stock market) is, in fact, quite bad and people will keep just voting against incumbents until it improves (it will not improve)

Truth be told we're probably just going to careen back and forth between one term presidents until the entire thing cracks apart. They can't do anything about the economy because those particular levers were removed from the public sector 70 years ago. Year of the Four Emperors

Abortion ballot measures passed (or in the case of Florida, got well over 50%. Nebraska gave workers the right to earn paid sick leave. Missouri voted to raise the minimum wage to $15. People want left-wing policies and Republican politicians, and ... that's tough.
