We all know hypocrisy is a problem.
Hypocrites pretend to be something they are not.
The ancient practice of virtue is the antidote to our hypocrisy.
I am writing a book about it.
Recovering Hypocrites, published by Herald Press. Coming Fall 2027.

One of the additions I made when I was revising the Daily Office Lectionary from the 1979 Book of Common Prayer included adding readings from Song of Songs.
Yes, this book of the Bible is an exploration of sexual love between a “Young Woman” and “Young Man” (these are the subheadings used in the NLT). But these days I read it allegorically as the affection love expressed between Jesus and the Church.
It is Jesus who says to us, “How beautiful you are, my darling. how beautiful! Your eyes are like doves” (Song of Songs 1:15).
May your eyes shine with the peaceable love of God today.

Jesus carried no sword.
He commanded no armies.
He committed no violence.
He suffered.
He died.
He rose again.
And remains the King of kings, Prince of Peace, and the Savior of the world.

Humility’s lowliness is the sharpened blade of love, cutting the roots of our self-obsession. It’s the internal outworking of the love given to us by the Holy Spirit, according to Paul, and infused into our soul, according to Aquinas.
Humility enables us to do by grace what God is by nature. Humility shapes us so we can love instinctively, as God is love.

Ready to dig into Chuck DeGroat’s new book: Who You’re Becoming. I had some time to look it over a couple weeks ago when I was at Western Theological Seminary.
Culturally, character has been nearly lost, replaced by power and productivity. Sadly the Church has been influenced by this cultural decency. We need more resources to grow in character and this is one of those resources!
Go get it!

On this episode of Peaceable and Kind, I talk to pastor and author @theandrewarndt about his new book The Work of Soul.. We both agree that modern Christians can learn so much from ancient Christians.
Go check it out!

Christian nationalism wants a kingdom without a cross. The prosperity gospel wants a crown without a cross. Both promise the greatness Jesus calls us to surrender.

Writing is an emotional roller coaster.
One moment I hate what I write, even after rewriting a sentence 7-8 times. I start questioning my life choices and second-guessing my abilities.
The next moment imaginative words are flowing down on the page in a poetic order. I think, “This is great.” And I love what I am writing.
It is such a crazy process.

Enjoyed my time at Overflow Church, a beautiful multi-generational & multi-ethnic church in Michigan. Talked Saturday night about allowing Jesus to shape our political imagination. Preached Sunday morning on the work of the Spirit to empower us & transform us by the love of God.
The Christ of faith is the Jesus of history.
Christ is not a consciousness.
Christ is not a universal principle.
Christ is not an archetype.
Christ is not an idea.
Christ is not a spiritual energy.
Christ is not a symbol of human potential.
Christ is not whatever we want him to be.
Christ is a title that means “King.”
Christ Jesus is King Jesus, one person with two natures, without confusion, change, division, or separation.
King Jesus, ruler of all.
