Fourteen #glulam beams helped make Truesdell Elementary School a structural first for DC Public Schools. Each approximately 73 feet long, the beams support a seven-inch cross-laminated timber deck spanning the school’s new double-height gymnasium and dining commons. Together with a conventional steel-braced frame, the system forms the centerpiece of DCPS’s first completed #masstimber project.
This milestone is part of a much broader modernization that brought together the renovation of a nearly century-old school, a new academic wing, community-oriented activity spaces, and a net-zero energy design.
The transformation is featured in “Academic Advancement” in the Summer 2026 edition of ArchitectureDC.
SK&A Structural Engineers was delighted to serve as structural engineer, working alongside the @DCDGS, @dcpublicschools, @vmdoarchitects , Blue Skye Construction and Development, DC, and @CoakleyWilliams.
