BIS Chief Warns Stablecoins May Not Scale as Everyday Money
BIS General Manager Pablo Hernández de Cos said stablecoins are not a credible means of payment at scale, arguing that tokenized bank deposits offer a stronger model for everyday transactions.
He said stablecoins and tokenized deposits could coexist, with stablecoins serving more specialized use cases. However, large-scale stablecoin adoption could shift funds away from bank deposits, increasing banks’ funding costs and potentially raising borrowing costs for consumers.
De Cos also warned about limited interoperability, AML enforcement challenges and the risk that widespread dollar-pegged stablecoin use could weaken monetary sovereignty in some countries.
