Our final post for #BannedBooksWeek is a 3rd ed. encyclopedia of the arts, sciences, and trades, from 1779. "Encyclop茅die: ou Dictionnaire raisonn茅 des sciences, des arts et des m茅tiers" is a joint project by French philosophers Denis Diderot and Jean le Rond d'Alembert.
This work, featuring contributions from over 100 people, aimed to capture information about the known world during the time of the French Enlightenment. Banned by the Catholic Church in 1767, the book covered topics directly opposed to what the Church wanted lay people to have.

As #BannedBooksWeek continues, here's a 1709 English translation of Desiderius Erasmus's "Moriae Encomium: or, A Panegyrick Upon Folly". Published in 1511, it's a satirical work and a critique of societal norms and the follies of humanity of that time. 馃摉 bit.ly/48KQ9Ii
Today, for #BannedBooksWeek, we鈥檙e taking a look at "De historia stirpium commentarii..." also known as "The Great Herbal of Leonhart Fuchs," an illustrated herbal published in 1549.
A Protestant physician, Fuchs faced a form of censorship known as expurgation, in which his name and certain descriptors attributed to him were removed from his works by order of the Catholic Church.
Our copy displays original expurgations from the 16th century; some remain, while others have washed off. Although the washed writing is faint, sometimes a strong enough light shone from behind the page so one could glean remnants of the text.

#BannedBooksWeek, established in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in book challenges in libraries, schools, and bookstores, highlights the dangers of censorship.
As the American Library Association states, "this year's theme reminds us that the right to read belongs to all of us, that censorship has no place in contemporary society, and that we must defend our rights."
This week, we will share three books from the 16th through 18th centuries from our #rarebooks collection that showcase different kinds of censorship.
It's officially #archivesmonth & it's World Postcard Day! Here's a postcard with a unique purpose - sign up for their mailing list & enter a contest for a cash prize for best article or essay about "Vaginal Douche Therapy" from the Marvel Company of NYC 鉃★笍 bit.ly/4nvQpzC
This semiannual edition of Rush鈥檚 Guide to Health caught our eye with its spring & fall cover. Capitalizing on the fame of Benjamin Rush, A.H. Flanders began his line of medical formulas in 1866, claiming the recipes were handed down by Rush himself.
