Fire Safety Week 2026 runs until Sunday, 18th of October. Do you know which fire extinguisher to use in an emergency? Not all fire extinguishers are the same. Hear from one of our Cork County Council firefighters which extinguisher to use and when. Periodic Checks: ✅ Check the service date is current ✅ Ensure the safety pin and tamper seal are intact In case of fire make sure the extinguisher is suitable for the type of fire, pull the pin, aim at the base of the fire, squeeze the handle and sweep from side to side. Knowing how to use a fire extinguisher safely could make all the difference in an emergency. @CorkCountyFire

Fire Safety Week 2026 runs until Sunday, 18th of October. Hear from Kinsale Firefighter, Angela, on fire safety tips for the home. ·         Fit a smoke alarm in every room (except the bathroom and the garage) to protect your home. ·         Get your chimney cleaned and your heating system serviced once a year. ·         Always use a sparkguard with open fires. ·         Keep a suitable fire extinguisher and fire blanket in the kitchen. ·         Empty ashtrays before you go to bed. Run the contents under the tap before you bin them, and never ever smoke in bed, or if you’re tired or on medication. ·         Fix or replace faulty electrical appliances straightaway. ·         Do a quick fire safety check before bedtime. ·         Close all doors at night. ·         Ensure you have a safe, clear access route in case of emergency. By regularly doing routine fire safety checks, following the STOP Fire steps, and by encouraging others to do the same, we can raise awareness of fire safety and safeguard our homes and our communities. Once a fire starts, it can be relentless, so it’s crucial to do everything possible to prevent one.
