Here’s the Hollywood happy ending: An independent distributor called Ketchup Entertainment—a name I did not make up—bought the film for $50 million, released it at the end of August, and the movie became an end-of-summer hit. The Ketchup Entertainment team executed a perfect one-two: They released a big success into theaters, and they proved that studio executives and their financial predictions are almost always wrong. commentary.org/articles/rob-…

The Saudis are currently treating their Houthi problem as an episode of Ted Lasso, hoping it can be solved by the mysterious appearance of a natural-born striker. And while the world would be a better place with more Ted Lassos in it, we’re not quite there yet. @SethAMandel commentary.org/seth-mandel/t…

LISTEN: Contributing editor @EliLake is back on this Monday to discuss the upheaval in France and the influence of Palestinianism and the “globalize the intifada” movement and how this will impact the upcoming French elections, as well as the warning signs to America with the rise of radical left-wing candidates. Plus, Eli recommends Merle Haggard’s Mama Tried, and @jpodhoretz recommends Ken Burns’ country music documentary. commentary.org/noam-blum/gal…

Polanski has been in the news a fair amount lately. On his watch, the Greens have transitioned from being a slightly quirky patch of left-wingers to being an openly anti-Semitic gang of aspiring authoritarians. commentary.org/seth-mandel/b…

If we had a clear view of how the system as a whole is meant to operate—taking seriously the role of states and the strictly delineated assignments of each federal branch—we could try to deduce the principles that tell us whether government is acting consistently with, or in violation of, our sacrosanct constitutional principles. commentary.org/articles/tal-…

Netanyahu’s achievements, with and without the input of the war room, are hard to deny. But the fact that the October 7 attacks occurred on his watch cannot be ignored. As the authors rightly note, “The buck must stop with the prime minister.” commentary.org/articles/jona…

I visited the old art deco News building the other day (the paper abandoned it in 1995 for some dump, now gone, in what is today Hudson Yards). The lobby is landmarked, so the marvelous rotating globe is still there, as are all sorts of weather-related gizmos that once upon a time could probably have told you about the barometric pressure in Burma. commentary.org/articles/mich…

LISTEN: Our friend @NoahCRothman joins us today to discuss the counterintuitive republican competitiveness in bluer states while floundering in historically easier races, particularly in Texas, where James Talarico seems poised to win the democrats’ first statewide race since 1994. Plus, the Trump administration’s disgraceful treatment of Ukraine and its incoherent strategy on the war, the turn against Indian Americans, and @jpodhoretz recommends You Can See Everything. commentary.org/noam-blum/tal…
