📈 “Every data point is a story.” At #PeopleCentredTech, Eric Wamugu presented Africa Mining Watch, which uses satellite imagery and machine learning to flag possible mining activity for journalists to investigate. The technology can point to a place on the map. People still have to establish what happened there, who was affected, and what accountability should follow. The summit ends tomorrow. Who decides what technology is for, how it is built, and whose interests it serves? This was among the issues discussed at the opening of the Summit on People-Centred Technologies in Africa, held in Nairobi. Michelle Ndiaye argued that values must come before capability. Ambassador Philip Thigo asked whether people-centred technology should go further and account for communities, the environment and the systems on which life depends. Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo placed responsibility with people and institutions that citizens can hold to account. The summit continues and closes tomorrow.
