Our North Division had a wonderful time at the Independence Hill Baptist Church Trunk-or-Treat this week! It was a great night filled with costumes, candy and community connections. In addition to all the fun, our officers hosted a community roll call there as well, helping strengthen relationships and engage with residents in a meaningful way. Thank you to everyone who came out and made it such a memorable night! 🎃🍬

On Oct. 27, at approximately 10:36 a.m., Independence Division officers responded to a Robbery call for service at Wells Fargo located at 1607 Sardis Road North. Officers learned a suspect entered the bank and demanded money. The suspect left without obtaining any money from the bank. Officers were able to obtain a suspect description which was used to positively identify the suspect as Anthony Watson, 67. A department-wide BOLO was issued. At approximately 12:37 p.m., Central Division officers responded to an Armed Robbery call for service at Wells Fargo located at 301 South Tryon Street. An alleged armed suspect demanded money from the teller before exiting the bank. The description of the suspect matched Watson’s description from the Independence case. With assistance from CMPD’s Real Time Crime Center, officers were able to quickly identify and apprehend Watson nearby. Watson was transported to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and charged with Felony Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon and Felony Common Law Robbery. He is currently being held without bond. For additional information on these cases, please refer to reports 20261027-1036-01 and 20261027-1237-02.

"In a matter of seconds, what started as a social gathering becomes a situation with life-changing and sometimes life-ending consequences." Hear from Major Stephen Fischbach about the dangers of chipeos and street takeovers, events that can quickly escalate and turn deadly, as witnessed this past weekend. Our detectives are working diligently with the community to monitor these large-scale gatherings to try and stop them from becoming violent incidents. Attending one of these meetups may seem harmless to some, but being present puts you at risk of arrest or charges for any illegal activity taking place, and an even greater risk of becoming a victim if violence breaks out. If you witness any large-scale car meet-up that is taking over a public space late at night or early in the morning, please call 9-1-1.

"In our day to day, when we're out in the public and we encounter somebody that is possibly experiencing homelessness or in need of resources, we contact CARES. They have a list of resources that they can offer them and sometimes those resources are utilized and that person is able to get help." Hear from Russell Letourneau and Taylor Evans of the @MeckCounty CARES Team, as well as Officers Hammond and Daly, about what the CARES team does and how our department and their team work together to help support those in need.
