Fewer boxes means less failure isolation. One unit down costs four cameras instead of one. That's the actual tradeoff. Worth saying out loud rather than burying it in a spec sheet.

Long GOP is harder on a multicam timeline than I-frame. Anyone who tells you otherwise hasn't cut on one. Still worth running the storage number on your own show. Most people haven't done it since 2023.

If you're recording ISOs at 700 Mbps and delivering at 40, you're paying for headroom you will never use. Two years ago that was free. This year it isn't.

Eight ISOs. UHD. Ten-hour day. ProRes 422 HQ: ~25 TB. XAVC Long GOP: ~4 TB. Same show. Same cameras. Same deliverable. NAND prices are up roughly 4x in three quarters. That gap used to be a rounding error.

Spec detail that catches people on UHD shows. Most dedicated recorders do four channels in HD. Move to UHD and they drop to one. Eight cameras stops being two boxes and becomes eight.

Different question at spec time this year. Not: what does this record to. What happens if I can't get it.

If your recorder only takes the manufacturer's own media modules, you have no second source. Can't substitute a commodity drive. Can't shop it. And on a multicam run you're buying enough to cover every camera, every day, plus rotation.

In March, Sony stopped selling nearly its entire memory card line. Not a price increase. They pulled the product. When a manufacturer halts sales instead of repricing, the supply is gone — not expensive.
