If I was Prime Minister , if I was Burnham , watching European cities ablaze . . . I’d instigate a ‘wealth tax’ at about 9.01am tomorrow morning . Just saying . Or should we just ‘eat cake’ ?

Just imagine if Cameron hadn’t ’cut the green crap’ , we could have renewables , jobs for making , installing , maintaining and managing them , an electric vehicle charging network and all this crap would be less of an issue for us . . . Oh well . . . bbc.co.uk/news/live/cqd0801d…

Thames Water is insolvent. Why on earth is Burnham not nationalising it?
🚨BREAKING Andy Burnham has just announced that he will repeal Margaret Thatcher’s ideological ban on public ownership of water companies. This is good news, and a sign of just how intensely this government is feeling the pressure from the public. But this means absolutely nothing if he does not then bring water into public ownership. Instead, Burnham’s speech doubled down on regulation as a way to fix the crisis in our water system. This is doomed to fail. When water companies are fined, they pass them on to us. When bonuses are banned, they call them something else. Burnham has an open goal with Thames Water. The company is insolvent. And the only option to keep it privatised is to hand it over to US hedge funds. Yet Burnham has failed to take them on today. Andy Burnham must take Thames Water into special administration and keep it in permanent public ownership. And he can use legislation to make it easier to bring other water companies into public hands when they continue to fail to deliver. It is time for a water system that truly works for us. Public ownership of water now. Nothing less will do.

I met loads of politicians when I was editor of Attitude magazine, loads of PMs. Ed Miliband was the nicest, kindest, most caring and most sincere. Just fyi. He also lost his mum this year.
What the hell was Ed Milliband crying for? 😬

Me for @EuropeanMag: why I’m calling for fast-growing ‘frankenchickens’ to be removed from public procurement , and why 80,000 of us have pledged to boycott @Pret until it delivers on its chicken welfare commitment . the-european.eu/story-66273/…

Weston Big Wood is irreplaceable ancient woodland & a protected SSSI . Yet plans could see around 500 homes built on Tower Farm and Black Rock , enclosing it on both sides . We should be protecting places like this , not building right up to their edges . c.org/8bV8Vy5Gm6

Good news! I made the case for banning adverts for high-carbon products back in 2020. It was important then and it’s even more crucial now. Huge respect to @adfreecities for their years of campaigning, and to my @bristolgreen council colleagues for making it happen 👏

A renegade polymath with binoculars and a beard , Bill was invariably funny and occasionally furious . He loved birds and loathed those who harmed them . He was delightfully unpredictable , sparky , smart and at times a bit spiky . Critically he really knew his stuff , and his passion was true - he didn’t just pick up his binoculars on telly , he went birding whenever he could . So he was genuine and that’s why we loved him , he never needed a script , and took scant interest in any he was given . He didn’t like rules and often neglected to play by them . This may have frustrated the serious and the worthy but it always amused his audience - he was an utter joy to be with . I recall finding a Black Woodpecker in a damp Dutch park with him once , he gazed at it intently , sighed , put down his bins , turned to me and just smiled . A massive grin . No words , just a beautiful childlike bliss . That says all you need to know about Bill Oddie . Sadly we’ve not only lost a goodie , we’ve lost one of the besties .

Toby Young makes a healthy living trying to undermine climate science and the need for action. He’s on holiday in Bordeaux - a city which may have to be evacuated because of the record breaking wildfires after record breaking heatwaves. What else could be more symbolic of the greed, stupidity and recklessness of these times.
I'm in Bordeaux, having come here with my wife to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary, and the smoke from the Gironde wildfire has reached the city -- our hotel room smells like a bonfire and there's ash in the air outside our window. But from what I can find out from Googling etc that is due to winds blowing in our direction from the west where the fire is raging, not because it's reached the outskirts of the city. It seems to be tracking the Cap Ferret peninsula and coastal pine forests, not moving toward the city. We're due to return to London tomorrow, but if the airport is closed and the fire is creeping closer to the city I hope there's an opportunity to help. Bordeaux is a beautiful city (a UNESCO world heritage site) and the left bank of the Gironde -- the same side as the fire -- is home to the best vineyards in the world.
