CHBA National President Curtis Mercer highlighted how the Association's three-level collaboration allows the industry to speak with one voice during his recent visit with Brantford Home Builders' Association and Haldimand-Norfolk HBA.
For members, this is one of the primary benefits of membership: a way to bring local business challenges to the attention of governments beyond their own municipality.
Thank you to both associations for welcoming Curtis and for representing their members’ priorities.

If you hope to build a custom home next year, fall and winter can be a useful time to begin planning with a builder.
Your lot can influence that planning. Site testing may be needed to assess soil conditions and inform engineering decisions. Your home’s plans also need to be developed and submitted for permit review before construction begins.
When you speak with a builder, ask what needs to happen before work can start on your property. Discuss which design decisions you’ll need to make early and how the required approvals could affect your preferred start date.
Starting that conversation now can help you understand the preparation your project needs.
Follow CHBA for advice on building and renovating your home.

The partnership combines CHBA members’ commitment to professionalism with RONA’s extensive Canadian footprint and support for PRO customers.
For homeowners comparing renovation quotes, price should never be the only factor. Written contracts and warranty protection matter, too. RenoMark contractors provide both, are verified by CHBA and follow a strict Code of Conduct.

Building a modern custom home in an established neighbourhood comes with its own challenges.
For "Courtyard Bungalow" in Calgary, Alloy Homes Incorporated had to respect neighbourhood massing restrictions while creating a home designed around the owners' lifestyle.
A low-sloped roof keeps the home's massing modest, while earth-toned masonry helps it complement the surrounding houses.
Inside, a vaulted living room with clerestory windows brings in natural light, while lower kitchen ceilings create a more comfortable setting for everyday living. A main-floor primary suite also supports aging in place.
Designed for seasonal living and family gatherings, the home also features a fully developed basement to accommodate guests and grandchildren.
Congratulations to Alloy Homes, a member of @bildcr, on winning the 2026 CHBA National Award for Housing Excellence for Best Detached Custom Home, 2,501–3,000 sq. ft.

For homeowners Betty and Bruce, renovating their 1950s Ottawa home meant creating a more comfortable, energy-efficient space that would support aging in place.
The project became Ottawa's first Net Zero Ready Renovation through the Towards Net Zero Renovations initiative.
In the latest episode of the Towards Net Zero series, hear from Betty and Bruce about their experience, alongside the professionals who helped bring the renovation together.
The video features Jeff Hurdis, Lead Designer & Renovator at Lagois Design Build Renovate; Stephen Magneron, Net Zero Energy Advisor at Homesol Building Solutions; and Gary Sharp, Owner of Airtight Home Technologies. All three companies are members of @GOHBA_Ottawa.
The team shares how they approached the challenges of upgrading an older home while preserving key architectural features. The renovation incorporated improvements to airtightness, high-performance insulation, advanced ventilation, and a cold-climate heat pump to improve comfort, indoor air quality, and energy efficiency.

Stone had to be craned over the house to install the lower-level bar at Sunridge Ascension.
The Whistler project earned Vision Pacific Contracting Ltd. the award for Best Whole Home Renovation, over $800,000, at the 2026 CHBA National Awards for Housing Excellence.
For the Sea to Sky CHBA member, steep terrain required careful planning and sequencing. Integrating new systems within the existing timber framing presented further challenges.
The renovation reshaped how the owners could use the home. A lower-level bedroom became a media room connected to the games area and custom bar. Between the entry and dining room, a ribbon-and-brass divider replaced a solid stone wall, preserving natural light and mountain views.
Renovators, what’s the most challenging delivery you’ve had to plan for a project?

When comparing renovation contractors, price is only one factor.
Mike Valchuk, co-founder of Building Dreams Contracting Inc. and a RenoMark member, recommends looking for experience with projects similar to yours. Check reviews and references. Pay attention to how clearly a contractor communicates about timelines, budget estimates, scope of work, and potential issues.
Before work begins, a detailed contract should outline the scope of work, timeline, payment structure, and warranty details. Mike also advises homeowners to be cautious of large upfront payment requests and to compare multiple quotes rather than making the decision based on price alone.

The Log House Reno by Hometown Homes, a member of @SaskatoonHBA, won a CHBA National Award for Housing Excellence after transforming a 1990s log house into a home better suited to a growing family.
The homeowners wanted more space and a more open area for gathering and entertaining. The kitchen was relocated from its enclosed location in the centre of the home into an unused section of the living room, while the former kitchen became an additional bedroom.
That redesign came with challenges specific to a log home. New kitchen windows had to be cut into the log walls, plumbing and electrical had to be rerouted into the new kitchen space, and a thermal imaging gun was used to locate the main floor’s in-floor heating lines so they would not be damaged during jackhammering.

Many builders don’t realize what their insurance covers, until a claim hits the job site.
From tools and materials to liability claims and business interruptions, residential construction comes with unique risks that standard policies don’t always address.
As part of its partnership with CHBA, Federated Insurance is helping bring added value to members through educational resources like the recent Insurance 101 webinar, available in the CHBA member section.
This session walks through the core types of commercial insurance every builder and renovator should understand, and why having the right coverage in place matters, well before something goes wrong.
