If we want to make homeownership more attainable in California, we have to start building condos again.
Today, we barely do.
Here's why that matters — and why I'm working on reforming California's construction defect laws. 🧵

This is why the @BayAreaCouncil and @bayplanning sponsored AB2051 by @BuffyWicks, signed recently by @GavinNewsom. State agencies must ensure coastal flood protection projects are permitted with an urgency that matches what's happening on the shoreline.
Scientists warn that an ocean wave driven by El Niño conditions could raise Bay Area sea levels by as much as 9 in. by early next week. That’s on top of sea levels already more than 6 in. above predicted levels because of warm water along the West Coast. kqed.org/science/2002141/an-…
Exciting things are happening in quantum computing, & they’re happening right here in California. Thank you @PsiQuantum for today’s tour, and for the look at what’s ahead. We need to keep investing in the people & ideas that will keep California at the forefront of this field.
48 new homes in Richmond!
Thrilled to celebrate Civic Center Apartments: a former motel transformed into permanent supportive housing for people who have experienced chronic homelessness. A powerful example of state + local partnership turning investment into homes & stability.
I couldn’t be more proud to support Scott Wiener for Congress. The choice is crystal clear. Scott is without question the strongest leader to fill the big shoes of Nancy Pelosi. He’s dogging determined, smart as a whip and has the tenacity to shake up DC.

THANK YOU to @AsmChrisWard and Asm @BuffyWicks for leading the effort on AB 2222, a bill that incentivizes newsrooms to hire and retain journalists. Thank you @CAgovernor for signing the bill into law TODAY! Read more: fox40.com/news/california-co…
I am ecstatic that @GavinNewsom just signed AB 2222, historic legislation I authored w/@AsmChrisWard that vaults CA to the forefront of protecting & rebuilding journalism in our communities. This is the capstone to vital work that began 5+ yrs ago, & our road has not been easy.
This vital tax credit will also grow over time & make an ongoing difference as we regrow + support journalists and newsrooms across the state.
This work is essential to a healthy democracy. It’s about keeping journalists at work asking hard questions, holding people like me accountable, telling stories that would otherwise go untold. Thank you @GavinNewsom for recognizing what’s at stake & signing AB 2222 into law.
I introduced the Journalism Preservation Act in 2023, which evolved into an innovative partnership w/ @CAGoBiz awarding grants to news orgs across the state, & is amplified by Berkeley’s groundbereaking journalism fellowship program which continues to grow & evolve each year.

When local news disappears, taxpayers pay more.
New research finds that the Community NEWS Act (AB 2222) could save California taxpayers at least $47.6 million a year in borrowing costs while helping local newsrooms retain and hire journalists.

ADUs are a win-win-win! 🏡 They create more housing, help families stay close for childcare and senior caregiving, build generational wealth, and can increase property values by 20–35%.
Thank you to Informa Connect—bringing live events, digital content, and training to professionals who want to achieve more—for bringing housing leaders together to advance the ADU revolution!
Assemblymember Buffy Wicks opened the conference with her bold work to break through the status quo and create more housing opportunities.
Conference Chair Noerena Limon, CEO of the Casita Coalition, shared plans to raise $20 million to expand ADU financing.
In my keynote, I called for banks to offer lines of credit and low-interest construction loans—and proposed an ADU showcase lot where homeowners could explore different models, just like shopping for a car.
Alpha X created California’s first-ever Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) condominium conversion, a historic milestone made possible by AB 1033.
Let’s turn more California backyards into homes! 🔑

Local news is essential to a healthy democracy — & there’s no single fix for the crisis it’s facing.
I talked with @BrierDudley about what we’ve learned in CA, the tools we’re putting to work, & why all of us should join in the fight to save journalism. seattletimes.com/opinion/cal…
This is devastating — for these journalists AND for the readers who depend on their work.
Strong local journalists ask the hard questions & hold people in power (incl. me) accountable. Every round of layoffs means less of that, which should scare everyone.
As part of national corporate cuts, McClatchy yesterday laid off 12 SacBee journalists including 5 @SacBeeGuild members.
This is by far the worst round of layoffs I’ve seen at the Bee since I was hired in Oct 2018.
Absolutely devastating and it’s the public who will suffer most
This is exactly what the tax credits in AB 2222 are meant for: more than $40M/yr toward journalism jobs. It cannot keep getting harder to keep CA journalists employed. We have to interrupt this cycle, & we should be using every tool we have to do it. sfchronicle.com/opinion/open…

More passionate remarks below from a variety of bipartisan leaders at today’s press conference in Marin County, where California Gov. @GavinNewsom @CAgovernor signed 13 bills he says will help keep children safer online. Newsom praised the legislation while calling on federal leaders and more governors to step up in this space.
“We’re going to again lead the nation, but the bar is pretty damn low.”

NOW: California Gov. @GavinNewsom @CAgovernor signs a package of bills he says will keep children safer online. 📱
Among them: 13 bills including a bipartisan measure by @AsmLowenthal (D-Long Beach) and @joshua_hoover (R-Folsom) to restrict teens 15 and younger from accessing certain addictive social media feeds (including infinite scrolling, autoplay videos, and frequent notifications).
Other bills include new protections involving AI companion chatbots, age verification, child sexual abuse material, digital wellness and more.
I traveled with the governor to Marin County for the signing ceremony. More to come on @kron4news, @FOX40, @KTLA, @KGETnews, @fox5sandiego, and our other stations across the state.

"Adam's Law," named after Adam Raine, puts stronger safeguards in place for kids using AI chatbots, including protections for children in crisis, parental controls, and alerts when safety settings are turned off.
I want to thank Adam's mother, Maria, for her tireless work getting us to this moment. You are a manifestation of what moms represent.
California will not stand by while unregulated technology puts our children at risk. Innovation comes with responsibility, and protecting our children comes first.
Adam Raine should be here. Nothing we do in Sacramento can change that.
But because his family turned unimaginable loss into action, Adam’s story will protect other kids.
Today, @CAgovernor signed Adam’s Law — putting critical guardrails in place to make AI safer for our kids.
