Out now!
"Studebaker ignites a necessary conversation about the intertwined nature of legitimacy and ideology. For those concerned with the future of embedded liberal democracies, this timely and insightful book serves as a warning against complacency." - @enzoreds
Coming with @EdinburghUP in November! Democracy as a hydra in a tar pit
Burdened by an excess of narratives, it is weighed down by the very means of its survival
A lot of people implicitly do not think France has an embedded democracy. Activity they would recognize as unserious were it to occur in Portland or London is venerated when it's done en français
I rarely agree with Rahman but this is consistent with what many people have pointed out about LFI and its internal culture: no serious interest in governing, despotic, personalist and centred around JLM, happy to mislead the public about policy, entirely theatrical, self-serving, cynical charlatanry, and, yeah, likely willing to fan unrest even in the knowledge that it might fuel support for the far-right, if it puts them in a better position to grandstand. Not that they are to blame for the escalation, but I resent the credulity of the anglophone left that has thrown in their lot with them, just because JLM babbles something about 'the creativity of the youth' and Guetté is 'slaying' holding a cigarette.
Just a total surrender to the worst bourgeois radical impulses which have kept the left irrelevant and obsolete: a focus on the rhetoric, theatre and aesthetics of activism and street politics, married to arcane theorising and academic solipsism.
A LARPer is not merely someone who differs at the level of substance from the person they are role-playing, but also someone who differs at the level of attitude
The historical figure believed in the ideas with a sincerity the LARPer not only lacks, but cannot access

In this episode, Nance and I are joined once again by Benjamin Studebaker for a discussion of Wes Craven’s ‘The People Under the Stairs’. This one is a personal favorite of mine, so it was great to hear what Benjamin had to say about. This episode is fun! Link in comments.
It is not that people do not have ideas; they do not have ideas for which they are willing to make sacrifices. The imaginarium is restricted not at the level of content but at the level of attitude. The ideas are held ironically, even when this irony is disavowed

Next up on Altered States Of Conversation: Political theorist @BMStudebaker and philosopher @OGRoseWriting , continuing the last few dialogues with @mbauwens Bauwens on civilisation and change.
There is a gratuitous overuse of the term "friction" now. It's being used to naturalize all sorts of social conflicts, stripping them of context. Human sociability has declined for reasons; technological solutions seem necessary and often are, given reduced human capacities

Brand new! We are joined once again by Benjamin Studebaker for a discussion of Paul Thomas Anderson’s ‘One Battle After Another’. Benjamin explains why this film, though presenting itself as political, is not truly a political film in any meaningful sense. Link in comments.
Danny co-hosted many recent episodes of Political Theory 101. We were going to do one on Istvan Hont, and now that will never happen. He was a voracious reader with an incredible memory. I hoped he might one day write a book; it's heartbreaking that he will never get the chance.
Danny Jacobs, one of my best friends on Earth and a generational intellect, passed yesterday. Everything in the world is grimmer than it was two days ago.
If you’re in NYC, I’ll be broadcasting on 89.9FM and wkcr.org tonight at 9pm for him.

"Many school districts exhaust committed, ambitious people with paperwork, so that they are too tired and busy to think of ways to exceed their mandates. But this also leads to job dissatisfaction and burnout."
