The gap between UK and French govt borrowing costs has narrowed over 0.75% - as investors shun French bonds. Interesting backdrop for upcoming French budget and next springs election.
The Prime Minister has said the water industry is an example of everything that went wrong in the 1980s. Mr Burnam said government will remove an "ideologocal" Thatcher era ban on public ownership of water companies in England and strengthen public control. He says where private ownership serves the public, the government will support it but with greater local involvement from regional leaders. This seems to leave the door open to all outcomes. It is not clear what this means for a consortium of private lenders who had hoped to take control of Thames Water with a 10 billion rescue plan. Thames Water is drowning in £20 billion of debt and is expected to run out of cash by the end of the year. Many of his own Mps have called for the nationalisation of the utility. Thames Water itself has warned that it will need to find £2 billion to fund its operations and investments next year - which under public ownership will have to come from public coffers.

Two things to note as borrowing costs in advanced economies stay firmly in focus:
The UK government paid a 5.82% yield on its £4.25 billion bond issuance today, the highest ever recorded by the Debt Management Office.
Amazon is launching its debt sterling bond offering, illustrating how US tech giants are increasingly diversifying into international bond markets.

Andy Burnham has described the water industry as "a leaking monument" to decades of wrong turns starting under the Thatcher government in the 1980s. He promised he would give customers "more ownership and control" of the industry. Using the word "ownership" is a subtle change from his promises to date which have promised "greater public control" - but stopped short of promising public ownership. There have been proposals floated to turn water companies into so called mutuals - owned by their customers - which have been studied by the government but dismissed by some as shutting off access to new equity capital. The private consortium attempting to take control of Thames Water will be hoping that doesn't mean their proposed £10 billion rescue plan will be rejected in favour of mutualisation or nationalisation - whether temporary or permanent.
Quite a comment from ex ceo of Goldman.
