Alaskan Fire Departments have struggled with recruitment and retention due to no retirement security. Add in increasing call volume, flat staffing, and working 56-80 hours a week and those issues grow exponentially.

With age, the Anchorage Fire Department fleet has become ‘inadequate’ and ‘somewhat unreliable’

Over the past decade, call volumes have increased by 60%. Staffing levels have not changed, nor has the number of fire engines and ambulances responding to emergencies.
