Over two days in Vredenburg, the #energyDRIVE Cape Route 2026 reached 801 learners at Weston, Louwville and New Vredenburg high schools.
SAWEA Interim CEO Ms Titania Stefanus-Zincke and Initiatives Manager Ms Kim Thomas joined the team as learners explored the truck and asked where their electricity comes from. With West Coast 1 Wind Farm just down the road, they could see that the energy sector is already part of their community, with room for their skills.
Thank you to Lerole Power Operations & Maintenance, part of ENGIE South Africa, and to all three schools for the warm welcome.
Follow along for the next stop.

The IRP 2025 sets a pathway to around 43 GW of new wind by 2042 (12,6 GW by 2030). SAWEA’s analysis, launched at #Windaba2026, looks at what delivery will take: grid access, workable procurement and coordination.

Our member @Vestas has launched the V182-7.2 MW, a turbine built to make more of lighter winds.
Its rotor has grown to 182 metres while the 7.2 MW rating stays the same, so it keeps generating well when conditions are calmer. Depending on the site, that means 4% to 6% more energy a year than the V172.
South Africa is one of the markets it was designed for. Many sites here have moderate winds, and technology like this helps projects get more from the wind they have.
Congratulations to the Vestas team.
SAWEA welcomes the first section 34 determination under IRP 2025, announced on 7 October by H.E. Honourable Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, Minister of Electricity and Energy.
• 9 600 MW allocated: 4 600 MW of battery storage and • 5 000 MW of gas-to-power.
• Less curtailment: storage will capture surplus renewable electricity for use during evening peaks.
• Wind is next: wind, including hybrid projects with storage, will follow in a subsequent determination.
SAWEA’s IRP 2025 analysis report, launched at Windaba, shows the industry is ready. Around 43 GW of new wind is planned to 2042, and more than 60 GW of wind projects are already in development.
We look forward to working with the Minister and our partners on the next phase.
