All are good, but only one was with Jim Crane at a Houston Awards Banquet
The Astros have reportedly expressed serious interest in three candidates for their vacant GM position, per @Chandler_Rome: - Matt Kleine (Brewers) - Josh Barfield (White Sox) - Randy Flores (Cardinals)

Josh and Randy are incredibly smart. No reason at all for either of them not to get the chance. I know each of them personally and worked with Flo (kinda) and Matt (Brewers). Astros win with any of them, provided they can work JimBags.
Out of Josh Barfield (former player & baseball guy), Randy Flores (former player & baseball guy), and Matt Kleine (analytics-first) for the Astros' new GM The correct answer is clear….. Do you want Flores or Barfield, who share Dana Brown's ideology, or Matt Kleine, who is more aligned with Luhnow and Click's ideology? Give me Matt Kleine 10 times out of 10 times if these are the options

Have to wonder if a @MLB owner, I don’t know, say Jim Crane, was seen in a high importance Houston event with a GM candidate if that would be news or mean anything? I’m gonna say, it does.

Can’t be more proud of our guy Daniel Espino. Batters hit 1-11 with 6 ks against him in the ALCS, going mainly against the Rays best hitters. We are glad the world is seeing what we knew about you years ago. #familia @CleGuardPro @CleGuardians @_JeremyBooth @BaseballAmerica

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗦𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗖𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗦𝗥𝗢𝗢𝗠 Stories Behind the Report 2/2 FOLLOW-UP PART ✌🏻 THE NUMBER MOVED. DID THE GRADE? Yes — it did for Mitch Talbot THE VELOCITY THAT WASN’T THERE YET But that’s not always the case and here’s why 👇 One of the questions young scouts frequently overlook is whether an improvement in velocity actually changes the overall evaluation. A pitcher might touch 95 mph in one inning and never reach it again. Another might sit 92–94 for six innings, maintaining his delivery, command and secondary stuff. Those are two very different evaluations. When I saw an increase in velocity, I wanted to understand what produced it. Was the pitcher stronger? Was his arm working more efficiently? Had he improved his delivery? Could he maintain the velocity through the middle innings? Most importantly, was this a legitimate improvement or simply one outstanding outing? There is a difference between recording a number and understanding what that number means. That’s why scouts build histories. One look might establish the baseline. Another might reveal improvement. A third might determine whether that improvement is sustainable. And sometimes the most important information comes when the velocity disappears. How does the pitcher compete without his best fastball? Can he locate? Does he have enough secondary stuff to navigate a lineup? The evaluation must account for the entire pitcher. A velocity increase should change the conversation. It shouldn’t automatically change the grade. Unless the positive bridges from POST☝️is mapped out. #BehindTheRadarGun 🔎

Jim Crane’s problem isn’t that he’s cheap - it’s that he’s spent poorly since 2022. 2022 McCullers $85m 2023 Abreu $58.5m 2023 Montero $34.5m 2023 Javier $64m 2025 Walker $60m 2026 Imai $54m Total: $356m Combined WAR since signing: 1.9 🫣 Overhaul the entire front office, Jim.

That is correct. This by the way, is the opposite of the thinking many clubs have. I do not get why.
This is only part of the story. The Brewers and Rays also have two of the largest scouting departments in baseball. Rays - 80 scouts Brewers - 64 scouts The best teams are the ones with both excellent analytics/R&D staffs AND robust scouting staffs.

Three teams left, and all three have bigger-than-average analytics staffs. Brewers: 46 (2nd in MLB) Rays: 39 Guardians: 30 League average: 28.5 The Phillies have the biggest staff in baseball, and they're already home. Like payroll, it's one input. Everything else combined still matters more.
