The original scene for 2009 had a better set up, but the execution lacked tension so they shot this instead.
My feeling, it's too random and uninspired in comparison to Jason taking the mask from Shelly in part 3 in an attempt to trick Vera.
2009 could have set this up better by giving the farm hand the hockey mask in his introduction scene at the wood chipper, using it for face protection from the debris.
A new mask should come with a tight little story arc behind it. Introduce it early, build tension of who has it at certain moments, and then see Jason take it for a reason, not randomly.
In Friday the 13th (2009), Jason finds his iconic hockey mask after killing a man who ripped off his burlap sack.
Crystal Lake Season 1 already introduced the sack. Season 2 could give us a completely different origin for the hockey mask, and considering how brutal the show has been, I doubt Jason will just find it lying around.

so many people hate part 5 and while I do understand where the disappointment comes from. I really can’t imagine the F13 franchise without it.
It expands on the world of f13, shows how the Jason Mythos affects people, and was a stepping stone in Tommy’s development. It’s great.
Friday the 13th Part V pulled off something the franchise barely explored again. The killer wasn't Jason. It was Roy Burns, a paramedic who copied his entire look.
Crystal Lake could have some fun with this in a future season. Bodies start piling up, everyone blames Jason, and the real killer is just some lunatic wearing his mask.

I do hate when people take aim at the Friday The 13th movies. It’s like swinging at low hanging fruit. The Friday franchise are the Hallmark movies of the horror genre. They are vanilla slashers that are comforting in their formula…that’s why we watch them.
