RFA does amazing reporting in the most difficult conditions in this region - especially Myanmar, Vietnam and Cambodia. We rely on them a lot - this is a real blow to us, to transparency accountability in Asia, to keeping people informed about what’s really going on. Very sad.
🧵 (1/3) The federal grants that fund Radio Free Asia and partner networks were terminated Saturday morning, according to a grant termination notice received by RFA.

And we're back! To kick off 2025, Pasi Sahlberg and Glenn Savage join Will Brehm for our first interview. Is it time to rethink the meaning of "effectiveness" and "improvement" and possibly embrace education philosophy?! Have a listen! 👇

Pauses in PhD admissions at Pitt, Vanderbilt, and USC.
The US will never be able to compete with authoritarian countries on a lot of dimensions. But our two biggest strengths over them were always immigration & our universities. And now we’re eroding both before our eyes.

SCOOP: @DOGE does damage control
A diff of "savings" estimates from doge.gov between today and yesterday shows that 4 rows have been edited - all corresponding to errors I called out in my thread yesterday. Let's see what they changed!
🧵
This is inaccurate.
In September 2022, the agency contracting officer mistakenly wrote $8B instead of $8M when logging in the FPDS database. DOGE discovered this error in January 2025, and the agency updated FPDS accordingly. DOGE has always used the correct $8M in its calculations.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
On 2/18/2025 the doge.gov/savings Wall of Receipts displayed this line item as $8b, but linked to the revision of this contract that was corrected down to $8m.

Multiple line items have been revised after errors were pointed out, but the claimed total savings of $55b has not changed.

After several delays, @DOGE has finally posted its purported savings. Why did it take so long to create a simple webpage with a 1000-row table? Who knows! Let's dig in.
Headline number: $55B saved. They list the savings per nixed contract. This should be easy to verify then.
🧵
It's Monday. @DOGE is the laziest, most overpaid bunch of incompetent, unelected bureaucrats we've ever seen.

Our buoyant tertiary education sector as measured by VC salaries - with the University of Canberra the most buoyant.
The salaries of Uni VCs are obscene when one considers the wage theft they’ve engaged in, the pittance they pay lecturers and the struggles of students. Have your say in the Senate Inquiry into Jacqui Lambie’s ‘There for Education, Not for Profit’ Bill. 👉 aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_Bus…
