From tracking harmful algal blooms to understanding public health trends and improving how people and products move through a city, location data can reveal patterns that shape real-world decisions. UToledo’s new Geospatial Science Program — the first of its kind in Northwest Ohio — will prepare students to work with that data using digital mapping, remote sensing, geographic information systems and emerging AI tools. The program builds on UToledo’s existing strengths while preparing graduates for careers in areas including public health, government, logistics, market research and supply chains. utoledo.edu/spotlight/geogra…

Darine Schreidah, an honors senior studying psychology on a premed track is preparing for a career focused on helping others through research and community service. Her research reflects a broader interest in the relationship between mental and physical health. Through an Honors College capstone project she will work with student participants who are starting a new antidepressant or anti-anxiety medication to examine their perceptions and experiences with their medications. “The University of Toledo has a strong emphasis on research. I was able to get involved in research very early on as a freshman, which isn’t necessarily the case at much larger institutions,” Darine said. bit.ly/4yALTEQ

Kaela Bartley, a masters student in environmental sciences, and president of UToledo's Student Green Fund cut the ribbon on the newly expanded solar array on Health Science Campus in late September. The project passed through several student presidents before Kaela took the helm last December. “To me, that handoff between generations of students is an important part of the story,” she said. The expansion more than doubles the array’s nameplate capacity, from 330 to 750 kilowatts. bit.ly/4yFF9WO

Dr. Aniruddha Ray, an associate professor in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, is working alongside researchers at the Institute for Life and Medical Sciences based at Kyoto University in Japan to combine advanced microscopy with single cell transcriptomics. This process allows for examination of gene activity within individual cells. By bringing these approaches together, he will be able to connect what can be seen happening to a cell with the underlying molecular changes that drive that behavior. bit.ly/47HfDoh
