College Baseball Program of the Day Tampa Spartans 🛡️⚾
In June, Tampa beat No. 1 West Chester 8-4 in a winner-take-all Game 3 in Cary, N.C. to win the 2026 NCAA Division II national championship. That's three straight titles (2024, 2025, 2026), the first three-peat in D2 baseball history, and the first by any NCAA baseball program since USC won five in a row from 1970 to 1974.
The resume:
🏆 11 national championships, the most in NCAA Division II history
🏆 8 of them since 2006 under head coach Joe Urso
📈 2026: 51-9 overall, 27-3 in the Sunshine State Conference, fourth straight SSC title
📈 2025: a program-record 55 wins
⚾ RHP Luke Fikar was the 2026 tournament Most Outstanding Player after winning Games 1 and 3 of the finals
Coach Urso is 1,113-306-1 in 26 seasons, with 19 SSC titles, 14 NCAA South Regional titles and six 50-win seasons. Associate head coach Sam Militello runs the pitching staff. He was the 1990 D2 National Player of the Year at Tampa, pitched in the big leagues for the Yankees, and has coached 21 All-American pitchers. Recruiting director Jose Jimenez is an eight-time national champion at Tampa as a player and coach.
The pro pipeline is real: 74 MLB draft picks since 2001, and big leaguers like Tino Martinez, Lou Piniella, Jordan Leasure and Anthony Nunez. Catcher Jhoander Irigoyen signed with the Cubs this summer right after the title run.

After three consecutive National Championships, @UTampaBaseball went into the portal and came out with arguably the best transfer class in 2027.
Here are nine names that standout:

Ben Karpowicz: The 2026 D2 Baseball 2nd Team All-American will finish his collegiate career with the Spartans after hitting .380 with 22 HR and 74 RBI last season at Wingate.
Mackenzie Wainwright: Another player that will finish his collegeiate career in the 813, Wainwright hit .406 with 14 HR and 59 RBI with Lenoir-Rhyne and earned a 3rd Team All-American selection last season
Nick Riedel: The rising sophomore will return home and play for Tampa in 2027. His freshman season at Newberry earned him 2nd Team All-American honors, going a perfect 10-0 with a 2.86 ERA over 86.2 innings.
CJ Hanson: The ABCA 2nd Team All-Southeast Region Pitcher will play his senior season with the Spartans, effectively replacing Robert Satin in the rotation. Over 91 innings, Hanson went 8-2 with a 2.77 ERA for Flagler.
Michael Savarese: After a season at D1 Pittsburgh throwing 20 innings, Savarese will enter the Division II ranks in Tampa. In 2025 at JUCO Pasco-Hernando, Savarese was a perfect 14-0 with a 1.71 ERA and 144 strikeouts over 110 innings.
