A lifelong Miner. A mental health pioneer. A mentor to hundreds. As a child, Richard Salcido '78, '86 watched the 1966 NCAA Championship team capture the nation's attention and fell in love with UTEP. That passion led him to become a Miner himself and launch a career that would help transform mental health services across El Paso. A College of Education alumnus and 2022 Gold Nugget honoree, Salcido dedicated his life to expanding access to care, reducing stigma and training the next generation of mental health professionals. From helping open the Center Against Sexual and Family Violence to leading Family Service of El Paso for decades, he made a lasting impact on the community he served for more than 40 years. Even in retirement, he continues to mentor future counselors and give back. Read his story here: bit.ly/MNRichardSalcido #UTEP #MinerNation #UTEPAlumni #MentalHealth #GoldNugget

The Mother Daughter Father Son Program kicked off its first event of the session on Saturday, October 3, 2026! Parents and students began their day at the new Texas Western House, where tour guides welcomed the group and provided a tour of the new building. They then continued their visit with a tour of the UTEP campus and attended a nursing simulation. It was a great opportunity for parents and students to explore the campus and learn more about what UTEP has to offer. We’re excited to kick off another session of the Mother Daughter Father Son Program! 🧡💙

On September 24, the UTEP Charles Butt Scholars 2026 Fall Gathering brought together our new and continuing scholars who are part of this prestigious scholarship program and the growing community of future educators. UTEP has been a proud Charles Butt Foundation partner for many years, supporting students preparing to become teachers.    The gathering was an opportunity to welcome our newest scholars, reconnect with continuing scholars, celebrate their accomplishments, and reflect on the important journey ahead. Through the Charles Butt Scholarship for Aspiring Teachers and UTEP’s Miner Teacher Residency program, scholars receive not only financial support but also opportunities for hands-on preparation, coaching, professional development, and connection to a broader network of educators committed to serving Texas students. We are proud to welcome this new cohort of future teachers and grateful to continue building a community that recognizes the importance of well-prepared, supported, and committed educators.   Congratulations to our 2026 Charles Butt Scholara! We look forward to seeing the difference you will make in the lives of your future students and communities.

Bringing Education Leaders Together at UTEP!   The UTEP College of Education was honored to host the Learning Policy Institute’s Culminating Conference for its Community of Residency Research and Practice from September 21–23.   We welcomed 12 educator preparation programs and universities from Texas and California, along with leaders from the Gates Foundation, Texas Education Agency, California Commission on Teacher Credentialing, EdTrust, and other organizations committed to strengthening the educator workforce.   Throughout the three-day convening, participants connected, shared research and practices, visited local schools and districts, and engaged in meaningful conversations about teacher residencies, educator preparation, and building strong pathways into the teaching profession.   This gathering was an exciting opportunity to showcase UTEP’s work in teacher residency programs, Grow Your Own initiatives, and partnerships that help prepare the next generation of educators.   Thank you to all of our partners, colleagues, and participants for making this convening a meaningful space for collaboration, learning, and innovation. #PicksUp #UTEPCOED #LearningPolicyInstitute #TeacherResidency #EducatorPreparation #TeacherPreparation #GrowYourOwn #TeacherPipeline #FutureEducators

UTEP’s Dr. Jesús Cisneros, Principal Investigator, and Dr. Azuri González, Co-Principal Investigator, are leading a new national research initiative focused on strengthening graduate STEM opportunities for low-income students.   UTEP, in collaboration with the Alliance of Hispanic Serving Research Universities (HSRU) and research partners from the University of New Mexico, the University of Illinois Chicago, and the University of California, Santa Barbara, has received a nearly $3 million award from the National Science Foundation to establish the S-STEM Hub: Translating Undergraduate Success into Graduate Opportunity.   The five-year initiative will bring together researchers from research-intensive universities to investigate how institutional practices and undergraduate experiences influence graduate STEM pathways for low-income students. Through collaborative, multi-institutional research, the Hub will generate evidence to help colleges and universities strengthen graduate opportunities and translate research into actionable institutional practices.   Read more: utep.edu/education/news/nsf-…
