MY SPEECH AT UON WHILE MEETING THE UNIVERSITY MANAGEMENT AND STUDENT LEADERSHIP. Education plays a vital role in shaping our society. Lecturers train doctors, lawyers, engineers and even politicians, yet they remain among the least paid professionals. We recognise the importance of fair remuneration for our teachers and lecturers. We will continue pushing for better salaries and improved working conditions for those who dedicate their lives to educating others.

Professor Mūriūki Was Such An Awesome Human Professor Godfrey Mūriūki was one of a kind. Special and dear. Generous and kind. A mentor. Teacher. Friend for all time. For life. They don't make people like this anymore! Really. Words fail to capture what kind of Professor this was. Personal and close. And he didn't do it for emoluments. Professor Mūriūki taught with his heart and mind. From the very core of his being. And that's the very heart of greatness. The reason I constantly sought him and visited him, and his wonderful and inviting family on his Chaka Farm more than once. The best tribute we could pay him is aspiring to be the kind of person that Prof was; an awesome human. Caring, compassionate and empathic. A friend for life.

Dr. Ombongi, @HumanitiesUoN has penned a tribute to Prof. Godfrey Muriuki~ The death of Professor Godfrey Muriuki in Nyeri on 15 October 2026 marks the passing of more than an eminent historian. It marks the departure of a scholar who helped give African history intellectual legitimacy, institutional permanence and a distinctly Kenyan voice. Yet his greatest legacy may lie beyond his publications. For 54 years, he remained at the University of Nairobi, building an institution while nurturing generations of scholars. Muriuki belonged to the pioneering generation of African historians who challenged colonial assumptions that Africa possessed neither a meaningful past nor the intellectual resources to interpret it. Their task was not merely to recover forgotten histories, but to restore historical agency to African peoples. Through scholarly rigour and intellectual patience, Muriuki helped establish the intellectual independence of African history. Read the full tribute- uonbi.ac.ke/node/5604 #WeAreUoN
