“The traditions and the rituals and the laws and the practices that have sustained us for 3,000 years are kind of now optional in the United States.” Commentator Shabbos Kestenbaum (@ShabbosK) on how America’s religious freedom became a double-edged sword for Jewish tradition. In conversation with a UATX student from the Austin Union (@austin_union).
Should a free society tolerate the intolerant? Can American Jews stay Jewish in a country that never forces them to choose? Why hasn't Holocaust education reduced antisemitism? Commentator Shabbos Kestenbaum (@ShabbosK) joins UATX student William Posey of the Austin Union (@austin_union) at UATX for a wide-ranging conversation.

I have a new Substack up, but not the usual opinionated spitballing. It is the exam review outline I wrote for my students at @uaustinorg, summarizing the origin stories of the American colonies. Let me know of any errors you see!

@DavidChaimovitz put in $10,000 of his own money and co-founded Setna, now an aviation parts and repair company worth roughly $2 billion.
In conversation with @AaronWebman, he told UATX students to look past the fashionable paths and consider old-school industry, where hard work and competence still set you apart.

At UATX, we're building a law program where students train under leading practitioners and sitting federal judges. Our General Counsel Adam Biggs spoke with @FoxNews about it: foxnews.com/politics/becomin…

This is truly one of the most exciting things happening in the legal profession. I wish others states in the Midwest were doing this same thing. We need more of this.

Old-school math meets new-school computation.
From Fourier series to Kevin Bacon numbers, I'm teaching courses at @uaustinorg that unite mathematical rigor with computational exploration.
UATX classics professor Carson Bay won the David R. Blumenthal Prize for his recent book on how medieval Christians and Jews negotiated their faiths using the Roman-Jewish historian Flavius Josephus.

These students are so awesome that I don't want to let them down!
Former US Senator Phil Gramm came to UATX to talk about AI and the economy. He ended with a confession: "If I could change anything about my life, I would have more children."
Asked about falling birth rates, Gramm said government programs won't fix them. "People have children when they're confident about the future." The answer to this existential problem is more freedom, more opportunity and more prosperity.
His closing advice to students: "Don't underestimate the value of having people you are tied to. The family is very important. Don't miss it."
What does American patriotism mean at 250? Three thinkers from across the spectrum take up the question: Claremont Review of Books editor Charles Kesler, Reason’s Matt Welch (@MattWelch), and Duke Law professor Jedediah Purdy.

Wish us all luck!
