Montréal-based technology investor @inovia secures $200-million USD first close for sixth early-stage #VC fund. #CDNtech betakit.com/inovia-secures-2…
I think this is the... fourth time I've seen this scam ad today? Always from a different (parody!) account. Report it every time, but there's no meaningful impact.
Canadian-founded, US-based #AI chipmaker @tenstorrent secures $1.5 billion USD Series E at $6.2-billion valuation to challenge GPU dominance. #CDNtech betakit.com/tenstorrent-secu…
US-based @AnthropicAI has been revealed as a long-term leaseholder for a large Nova Scotia data centre project—the #AI giant’s first data centre in Canada. #AtlCan betakit.com/anthropic-signs-…
“The stock market is not even the stock market. The stock market is AI companies.”
@kylascan joins The BetaKit Podcast to discuss why #AI is viewed as the saviour of the US economy and the effect that's having on the public markets.

In prep for this panel, I was struck by how similar #AI and quantum are:
- frontier technology
- huge CAPEX requirements
- long time horizons to successfully commercialize
But quantum leaders don't act like AI leaders:
- They don't make bold proclamations (AGI, digital god, etc.)
- They don't fundraise on FOMO
- They're collaborative across the industry
They also haven't lost control of their tech.
I really wanted to know if those differences are inherent to the industry and the people building it, or would simply dissolve later as the pressure to scale compounds.
Have a watch and let me know what you think.

Ahem.
For those who may be unaware, Montreal is a cold *winter* city. Colder and snowier than Toronto.
And it now ranks 2nd among the world’s best cycling cities.
So don't even.

.@GetKoho's @DanEbs has strong feelings on prediction markets. On The BetaKit Podcast, he called them techwashing for what is essentially gambling.
It's a principled stance from someone about to run a bank, and it’s not the only candid moment he offers

Canada invented maybe the greatest investment account in the history of money, then named it after a piggy bank.
So now roughly $350 billion is sitting in TFSAs as cash. Doing nothing. Being slowly eaten by inflation.
A small, boring policy idea that could be worth hundreds of billions of dollars: change the name. Make it the Tax-Free Investment Account.
It might sound silly, but the name matters. Nearly half of Canadians with a TFSA (sorry, TFIA) keep their savings in it as cash. At Wealthsimple, it’s 6%. Over a few decades, that gap compounds into an enormous amount of money.
One word. Let’s change it, close that investment gap, and actually help Canadians build wealth.

Canada says it will finally launch its real-time payment rail this year. But sources say none of the Big Six banks are scheduled for Phase 1.
As @GetKoho's @DanEbs put it, a system that 95% of the country can’t access risks being “kind of performative.”

An update from me on Canada's Real-Time Rail system. After repeated delays, a first phase is scheduled to go live this year. But Canada’s biggest banks, which settle the majority of payments, likely won’t be participating in this first phase, sources say.

I still check in with Lucifer on the Sofa like a cherished friend, but my hands are itching for a new Spoon album.
