my first PL contribution was adding TCO to Hy by throwing exceptions and catching them with a decorator. My favorite part was the tagline: “The speed of Python with the readability of LISP!”

having a touch of the 'tism had a good run, but that era is rapidly coming to an end
I have a very intellectually rewarding job, hacking in Haskell on problems directly related to my PhD research
i’m painfully aware that this is not the case for most of humanity
i’m also realistic enough to know that i will have to continually adapt to new reality. Are you?
if you’re annoyed by monads, just wait. the futamura projections are even more useful and magical
Replying to @HSVSphere
i mean that’s the point, it’s the partial evaluation, the futamura projections, you’re essentially saying: I *know* i’m only calling this function with these values so you can a) prove it and b) even speed it up

my dream job is as a computer at NASA
sadly they automated that
For those crying “it’s the end of math!”:
it’s not. you can still do math. read textbooks, papers, solve problems. the only change is that a university will not pay you to do so.
you’re not sad that “math is over”, you’re sad that the prestige is gone.
for a class project I once suggested loading a drone with SSDs and having them fly between buildings, docking and transferring.
With a DJI FlyCart 30 full of Kioxia 245.76 TB LC9 SSDs
You can get up to 2.95 petabits/s of flight-only bandwidth!
it's a running joke with my dad how incredibly impractical Formula 1 cars are. Imagine having to change the tyres on your car every other week!
But that's the point, this tech is not meant to be practical, it's not going in a soccer mom van. It's just supposed to be cool!

New blog post introducing string diagrams: this is a visual language that we can use to talk about many different kinds of type systems.
Then I use them to show how a monad really *is* a monoid in a category of endofunctors.

you may not think this is impressive
but with the amount of permits and EU legislative competence they needed, it’s amazing
I love how we went from "nobody cares about esoteric programming languages and theorem provers" to "holy damn, we've solved math" in like, 2 years
