What a day we had at The Grand Pier in Weston-super-Mare ! We just wrapped up the annual Theo Paphitis Retail Group (TPRG) Store Manager’s Conference, and the energy was - once again - absolutely incredible. This year was all about teamwork as we gear up for Christmas and beyond. Our brands held dedicated breakout sessions to strategise, celebrate the past year's wins, and get fired up for the busy festive season. A massive highlight was celebrating the incredible loyalty of our team with our Long Service Awards - recognising colleagues who have been with us for anywhere from 10 to a phenomenal 50 years! Having open, honest dialogue between our store managers and leadership teams is essential to how we run things at TPRG. Getting in a room together with the people who run our stores on the ground and know them inside out is always an invaluable opportunity. After a quick wardrobe change, we took things back in time for a 70s and 80s-themed party on the pier. We celebrated even more amazing colleagues at our evening awards ceremony, enjoyed a brilliant three-course meal, and danced the night away. Today, my #SBS Small Business Sunday network turns 16. Every year, this community grows and continues to inspire me. I’m often asked what I love most about it, and my answer is always the same: it’s the infectious enthusiasm that only a small business owner has. What began as one social media post has grown into a network I could never have imagined - with 5,000 business owners, and counting, supporting one another on their business journeys. Over the past 16 years, #SBS has hosted 14 annual events and 25 bootcamps alongside NatWest, gifted more than 100 Spring Fair stands to our community and so much more. This week is Dyslexia Awareness Week which, as many of you will know, is a subject very close to my heart, with the theme a very important one of Dyslexia in real life: at work. When I was at school, I was labelled “thick” and put in the bottom sets because of my dyslexia. I ended up leaving at 16 with virtually no qualifications. But I quickly realised that to survive, I had to find workarounds. I didn't just learn to think outside the box - I had to build my own. This is something that absolutely came into its own when I started in the world of work, because I was solutions-orientated. I can now safely say I wouldn't be where I am in business today without it. We’ve had a busy year pushing for change, from my role as Vice President of the British Dyslexia Association to Ryman funding a major new report that we recently launched at the House of Lords. Attitudes have thankfully moved on a lot since my school days, but the system still holds too many brilliant minds back, and there is plenty more work to do. It's all about keeping the conversation going. I'd love to hear how you have managed to turn your dyslexia into a strength. Or, if working with dyslexia is challenging for you, how could the workplace help you to navigate this better. Do share your experiences and thoughts below.
