The Dark inbox is once again empty: your best bet, at the moment, would be something on the smaller size, 2k to 4k, rather than something longer. As always, quick responses are the usual norm at this magazine, so you really can’t go wrong in trying us out!
1) As there’s been an uptick on AI-generated submissions lately, we’ve gone ahead and updated our guidelines for The Dark, with this statement, lifted pretty much from the @clarkesworld website:
2) “We will not consider any submissions written, developed, or assisted by these tools. Attempting to submit these works may result in being banned from submitting works in the future.”
In brighter news we’ve just accepted two stories from returning authors, “Of Gentle Wolves” by @JamesBennettEsq and “Silk-Wrapped Love Story” by @dracopoullos, both scheduled for next month’s issue of The Dark!
1) An important update for The Dark: since Amazon is winding down the Kindle Newsstand later this year, it’s obviously going to impact the magazine. Rather than wait and see just how bad it’s going to get, I’m moving ahead . . .
2) . . . and reverting back to the original two originals / two reprints approach that had originally been in place a few years back. Very little else will change.
Surprise! We’re proud to announce a podcast adaptation of “Love Sharp Enough to Rend” by @LeahNing, as narrated by @vforvoice, for The Dark! Enjoy! thedarkmagazine.com/love-sha…
An early Christmas present, a sneak peek at next month’s cover, with stories by Shari Paul, Nelson Stanley, Leah Ning, and Ai Jiang, with art by Mona Finden!
A head’s up: we just accepted two stories for the January issue of The Dark, but we are still short two more, and I need them in hand in two weeks or less. As an enticement, here’s a sneak peek at the cover for next month. Your name could be on the front, too! :p
A head’s up: due to whatever fresh hell is spreading among schools right now, submission response times may be impacted for a few days. Fingers crossed!
September’s issue brought with it three authors new to the magazine! So we have stories by James Bennett, Meg Elison, Kurt Newton, and Richard Strachan, with a stunning piece of artwork by Mona Finden.
It’s been a busy September but we recently accepted stories by Lisa Chen, Bibi Osha, Alison Littlewood, and Margot McGovern, for our October issue! We still have spots in November and December, though!
Every month we receive between six hundred submissions at The Dark and eleven hundred at CW. So a story really has to be different in order to catch our attention. (And not violate the guidelines in some form or fashion!)
