SAM AGWA: "The emerging “tower of Babel” against Governor Alia should not automatically be mistaken for a movement of redemption or a political crusade seeking a common good or advancing pro-Benue essence. Certainly, it is not a gathering of superior ideas or goodwill, but a convergence of people driven and united by vengeance, justifiably or otherwise. It is gathering of proponents of zero party discipline, zero common good yet 100 percent individualism. But Benue must make no mistake that the rainbow coalition is for change. It is a ferocious coalition of the willing, with cash and glamour ready to roll out the bullion vans. It is a bowing rainbow for the restoration of lost privileges, displaced tiers of influence, and renewed access to the inner chambers of political decision-making and power. They have gathered." thecable.ng/benue-guber-2027…

HENRY ANIBE AGBONIKA: "Nigeria’s economic ambitions demand improvements in infrastructure, industrial production, productivity and the conditions for private investment. Progress will depend partly on institutions capable of developing sound policies, facilitating economic activity and implementing complex programmes. The Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan (FCSSIP) 2021–2025 offers a useful reference point, having addressed capability building, talent management, performance management, innovation and digitalisation. Future reforms must build on these foundations as the responsibilities of the public service become increasingly demanding. The implications are considerable. Infrastructure development requires expertise in investment appraisal, procurement and contract management. Industrial expansion depends on regulators who understand productive enterprises, trade officials who facilitate commerce and policymakers capable of addressing barriers to business growth. Effective public investment also demands credible financial management, reliable data and the ability to determine whether public expenditure produces its intended results." thecable.ng/nigeria-wants-a-…

LEKAN OLAYIWOLA: "Nigerian governors are being asked a simple question: where is the relief? Between June 2023 and October 2026, states and local governments received a combined N31.77 trillion in FAAC allocations, not all of it new. The World Bank says state revenues rose about 93% in real terms between 2023 and 2025, and expenditure about 92%. Yet poverty only stabilised this year, and 133 million Nigerians were multidimensionally poor in 2022. Citizens do not experience government revenue as an accounting entry. They experience it through the services they can access, the infrastructure they use and the opportunities available to their families. As the 2027 elections approach, the question is not simply how much money governments have received, but what impact it has on struggling households. The World Bank says poverty stabilised only this year, for the first time since 2019, and the NBS counted 133 million Nigerians as multidimensionally poor in 2022." thecable.ng/why-hardship-per…

ADAGHER TERSOO: "For Nigeria, the lessons of Lekki remain both urgent and unavoidable. A democracy cannot be judged solely by the regularity of its elections or the strength of its institutions on paper; it must also be measured by how it treats citizens who challenge authority, demand accountability and insist on their rights. Government must demonstrate a genuine commitment to investigating allegations of abuses, implementing credible recommendations, compensating victims where appropriate and strengthening mechanisms that prevent the recurrence of such incidents. Security agencies must understand that public trust is built through restraint, professionalism and service, not intimidation. Equally, the judiciary, civil society, the media and other accountability institutions have important roles to play in preserving evidence, protecting witnesses, countering misinformation and ensuring that legitimate questions are not dismissed simply because they are uncomfortable. Justice must be pursued through credible processes, and the truth must not become a casualty of political divisions. Without these commitments, the wounds of Lekki risk remaining open, weakening confidence in the institutions responsible for protecting the public. As Nigeria remembers October 20, 2026, the sixth anniversary of the Lekki incident, the country must confront the meaning of that night with honesty, compassion and a renewed determination to protect human dignity." thecable.ng/a-night-nigeria-…
