Representatives from the fossil fuel and chemical industries outnumber delegates from low-income countries 2:1 at the fourth round of #PlasticsTreaty talks.
Analysis from @ciel_tweets and others revealed 196 petrochem lobbyists are registered for this week’s talks.🧵
📢 NEW: 196 fossil fuel and chemical industry lobbyists have registered to participate for the critical #INC4 #PlasticsTreaty talks in Ottawa.
That’s more participants than the entire EU delegation, scientists, and Indigenous Peoples.
The number at the last round of negotiations was already high but we’ve seen a 37% increase this time around.
Negotiators must not allow themselves to be swayed by the lobbying of representatives from industries that directly profit from the #PlasticsCrisis.
People living in poverty are the most affected by the impacts of #PlasticPollution, from toxic fumes from open burning to increased flood risk from plastic blocked waterways.
A successful plastics treaty must tackle these impacts rather than bending to industry lobbyists.
