Another summary... this time Unlocking Oracy - thanks to Nikki Sullivan, Kelly Heaton, Lucy Lowde for providing a super informative and useful lens to think about this much discussed topic! Thought-provoking, research informed - a treasure of a book! itsalearningcurve.education/…

This quote gotcha thing is tragic. Laughable really. But here goes.. The video is about teaching people in a class - they are not wearing masks or hiding behind a screen. You'd know who the are. FFS. Anon accounts have zero accountability so I chose not to engage. It's perfectly consistent with wanting to hear the voices of my students.
Nobody is obliged to engage with pseudonymous accounts. But there is some irony in doing this when discussing a video that claims every voice matters and talks about the importance of sharing ideas.

Hilarious. LOL. Not quite the gotcha you'd imagine, more a case of q.e.d. Unless of course, you really don't think students have prior knowledge and ideas worth exploring or if you don't understand that knowledge has to be constructed, meaning has to be made; you can't just zap your knowledge into your students' heads. But hey, seal claps all round eh?!

This week,we compared math data &noticed weakness in constructing reasoning to justify/refute claims. As I listen to @teacherhead’s #WhyOracyMatters, I can’t help thinking oracy is key. When Ss talk through their ideas, they strengthen the cognitive processes that help them learn.

The term “oracy” won’t float everyone’s boat, but there’s no doubt that oral language abilities need to be developed (a) in their own right and (b) to support reading and writing skills across the curriculum and across year levels. Oral language is not “set and forget”. I’ve written about this in a number of open access publications, including this one: scholar.google.com/scholar?h…

Attempting to get all the training the @trust_leaf TA’s received on adaptive practice last year onto a single A3 learning mat ready for it to be built on at Friday’s TA conference focusing on ‘Inclusion by design’. Thanks to @teacherhead & @EducEndowFoundn for many of the models.

Oracy is neither a soft option nor a slogan. It is taught knowledge. Chapter 1 of Speaking Truths: the five false choices holding back the debate, and what the new oracy framework should commit to. Hard to assess is not the same as not worth teaching. danmorrowedu.substack.com/p/…

A little reminder. P8 is zero sum by design - ie centred around zero. Only 16% get +0.5 and above. Half of schools are blow zero. If you sneer at these schools you're the problem. Projecting the idea that it's only the 16% doing good work is bullshit. Get over yourself.

Oh what... apparently oracy is to blame for Wales having a declining PISA score. Seriously you couldn't make this shit up. The sorry state of evidence-informed folk grasping at graphs looking for dubious causality. It is just pathetic. Laughable. FFS. Grow up people.

So much to say about oracy - blog pending - but my inbox flooding with very sensible people saying 'wtf is wrong with everyone'? Why are all the great champions of standards so challenged by students having a voice and learning to express it ? What kind of education is that? And if a high P8 doesn't also embed oracy as a core element - mayyybe it's not all that? Feels like toys being thrown out of the pram ... and blimey, thank god my own children had teachers who actually valued their voices.
