Watch KIND's Jason Boyd discuss growing concerns about information sharing between ORR and ICE during a press briefing hosted by Acacia Center for Justice last week.
Children as young as 5 are reportedly being offered $3,000 to leave the U.S., sometimes without an attorney or time to consider the consequences.
A child cannot be expected to understand the legal protections they are giving up.

Children in immigration court need independent lawyers whose sole duty is to advocate for them.
AP reports HHS is creating an in-house legal team to represent unaccompanied children, raising serious concerns about independence of counsel and due process.

KIND was seeing 10 asylum interviews for clients monthly at the start of the year. After federal legal-services funding lapsed, that jumped to 125+ a month.
Children need time to build trust, prepare, and be heard. Now they’re being given less of it.

Thank you @RepSalinas for joining KIND’s press call and raising concerns about unaccompanied children.
Children deserve legal representation, due process, and safe family reunification—especially amid prolonged detention and accelerated proceedings.

“These proceedings could determine whether you remain in the country or are removed.”
But what does that mean to a 13-year-old without a lawyer? A 7-year-old? A 3-year-old? Being in court does not mean a child can meaningfully participate in their case.

A fair legal process can't depend on a child understanding immigration law alone.
Yet unaccompanied children are facing the U.S. immigration system without attorneys. The Fair Day in Court for Kids Act would guarantee them legal counsel.

Unaccompanied children in US federal custody deserve strong safeguards.
Yet in Texas, facilities housing them operate without state child-welfare licensing as more children are sent there. Children in immigration custody deserve protection and oversight.

U.S. federal agencies are coordinating policies that make it harder for unaccompanied children to reunify with family, access legal support, seek protection, & avoid prolonged detention.
When protections are weakened, children face the consequences.

An 11-year-old waited nine hours for his U.S. immigration court case to be called.
He was one of 25 children in a mass virtual hearing. About half had lawyers. He did not.
Children shouldn't have to navigate the U.S. immigration system alone.

On U.S. #CitizenshipDay, we’re reminded why pathways to citizenship matter. For unaccompanied children, they offer the stability, safety, and fully belong in the communities they now call home. Protecting those pathways helps make that future possible.

Children are being given as little as 3 weeks to find a lawyer.
Meanwhile, asylum grant rates for unaccompanied children fell to about 1.5% in July.
Due process cannot be rushed when a child’s right to be heard is at stake.
