So excited with Starknet
A few weeks ago, we announced the definitive targets of our 2024 roadmap:
🐺 Becoming the L2 with the highest TPS capacity
🐺 Average transaction fee consistently below $0.01
Now, let's discuss how we plan to achieve these targets! 👇
1⃣ Becoming the L2 with the highest TPS capacity thanks to Transaction Parallelization and Cairo Native
In order to fully understand both upgrades, here is a quick reminder: the mission of the Starknet sequencer is to process transactions and create blocks. Hence, any optimization of the Sequencer increases the network throughput. This is exactly what Transaction Parallelization and Cairo Native offer:
🐺 Transaction Parallelization allows the sequencer to concurrently process several transactions.
🐺 Cairo Native facilitates faster execution of Cairo instructions by circumventing an intermediate compilation step.
The principle behind Transaction Parallelization is very simple: rather than managing transactions sequentially (one by one), the sequencer will be able to manage transactions that are unrelated to each other at the same time. Crude example: an ETH/USDC swap on AVNU by user A with an NFT mint by B on Pyramid.
This will allow the Starknet sequencer to be able to handle many more transactions at the same time, reducing latency and increasing throughput 🕺
On its side, Cairo Native is a compiler with the goal to convert Cairo's intermediate representation (called Sierra) into Multi Level Intermediate Representation (called MLIR). In simple terms: Cairo Native makes it easier to understand Cairo instructions.
By integrating Cairo Native into the sequencer, the sequencer will be able to skip decoding & running cairo-vm instructions, and run native assembly directly, thus allowing it to execute transactions and create blocks more quickly!
Here is the superb analogy of @omarespejel to easily understand the implications of Cairo Native:

2⃣ Reduction of DA costs through Volition
We have several optimizations planned at the stack level throughout 2024 to decrease fees and costs.
As you know if you're paying attention (🤓), Starknet’s main operating cost arises from the data we store on Ethereum, which is related to transactions made on Starknet. The EIP-4844 upgrade, along with various optimizations around it, resulted in a massive 95% cost reduction (!) on Starknet. This great cost reduction came with a corresponding reduction in transaction fees.
It’s huge, ngl, but we believe we can further reduce transaction fees by another order of magnitude this year. The main central feature in this effort will be Volition.
Volition will give developers the option to choose where the transaction data for their dApps are stored:
🐺 On Ethereum, which offers maximum security but for a higher fee (Rollup mode)
🐺 Directly on Starknet, which remains highly secure, albeit slightly less than Ethereum, while being significantly cheaper (Validium mode)
This will allow developers to optimize their contracts by choosing the data availability mode at the individual storage variable level. In this way, the trade-offs regarding gas fees associated with a dApp, and its level of security, will be determined by developers and users of each dApp themselves.
Note that Volition's timeline is still TBD.
In conclusion, the main takeaway is that Starknet aims to be the cheapest L2 to use on the market and the fastest by a significant margin. And our plan to get there is crystal clear:
🐺 Transaction Parallelization and Cairo Native to substantially increase our TPS capacity.
🐺 Volition to further reduce TX fees by a new order of magnitude.
Exciting time ahead 🧑🔬

Amazing work by @class_lambda team on Cairo Native.
It was a crazy idea and it’s starting to show off very promising results.
Once it will be production ready it will bring a huge performance boost on the sequencer for @Starknet.
Congrats @fede_intern and team for this big milestone.
After 10 months of work the @class_lambda team that worked on Cairo Native achieved full compatibility with the Cairo VM.
Cairo Native is a AOT/JIT compiler for Cairo that generates native code thanks to MLIR. This makes Cairo potentially as fast as C or Assembly. It doesn't generate a trace to be proven like the Cairo VM that we have implemented last year. Cairo Native let's you run Cairo as fast as possible in the sequencer and in local development tools.
It can do 1767 swaps per second (swaps are more costly than transfers) in a Macbook Air M2 using Starknet In Rust with the @yetanotherswap UniswapV3 codebase created by @robertojcatalan and his Yet Another Company. The VM can do 21 swaps per second.
Congrats to everybody from our team that worked really hard to achieve this for the @Starknet community. We hope this project is tested, used by the community and goes to production in the next few months.

Now that the news is out, we might as well tell you more!
Starknet is about each of you. Every user, builder and member of our community – existing and future – is a critical piece to building our network into the future of decentralisation for generations to come. The success of Starknet depends on this.
With that, we’re excited to share the next steps of our journey ahead together.
TLDR: We have plans to allocate over 1.8bn STRK tokens across multiple initiatives to drive the adoption and growth of the Starknet blockchain. The first is about to start soon.
1/ Provisions Committee & Initial Distribution of STRK
The Provisions Committee has been allocated 900M STRK for the fair, decentralised and transparent distribution of STRK over multiple programs and phases. The committee’s objective is to distribute ownership of the network’s native token and to reward past and future contributions by users and community members.
We’ve been working on the first phase of distributions for a while now and we are close to getting this over the line. There’ll be more formal communications on this soon.
2/ Network Rebates in STRK
Additionally, we’ve dedicated another 900M STRK to user rebates.
Planning for this initiative is currently underway and a new committee is being formed to oversee the distribution of STRK to reward users for their vital transactions on the network. This marks a bold step in valuing and empowering our user community by rebating them for their transaction fees on the network.
3/ On-Chain Incentives for DeFi
We’ve allocated an initial 50M STRK to explore the direct, indirect and retroactive incentivisation of activity on DeFi protocols by boosting liquidity, volume traded and general growth of the DeFi landscape on Starknet.
This is led by the DeFi Committee. They are nearing the end of their research phase and will move into execution and deployment in Q1 2024.
4/ And more!
Next week, we’ll be announcing an innovative new incentive mechanism for developers & dapps on the network. This is all we can reveal for now, stay tuned for our update next week.
* Eligibility to receive STRK tokens will be subject to terms & conditions.

Starknet’s secure settlement on Ethereum scales the network by orders of magnitude. How?
✅Starknet’s STARK proof of bundled transactions and state diff are sent to Ethereum.
✅The verifier on Ethereum analyzes the proof.
✅Math—meaning the STARK proof—ensures all transactions are valid.
✅The confirmed proof is then sent to the Starknet core smart contract, which updates the Starknet state on-chain.
✅The new Ethereum block is then voted on by nodes and, voila! Finalized.

(1) an inherent characteristics of all existing #AMMs: higher capital efficiency (so lower slippage for users) results in greater impermanent loss & complexities for LPs. Maverick @mavprotocol, UniswapV3 @UniswapFND trade off IL (LP's benefit) for slippage (user's benefit).

the very first application of ZKP is onchain privacy. I reviewed ZKP & privacy protocols in 2019. Now, ZKPs are widely adopted to build layer-2s. zk-STARK, being developed by @Starknet, is trustless in setting but hard to make it EVM-compatible.

GMX-inspired perps come to Starknet thanks to Satoru.
@SatoruStarknet is a new project started by Starkware's exploration team to build a decentralized synthetics platform for Starknet, written in Cairo, inspired by GMX v2 design.
imajin GMX without the Solidity limitations. 🔥🔥
The goal is for Satoru to be a public good that remains neutral so anyone can build products/businesses on top of it. The exploration team does not want to endorse any specific teams as leaders.
The architecture is modular with different modules interacting. The router is the main entry point for users. The exchange handles routing to appropriate modules.
The first MVP with an end-to-end flow is expected by end of October.
The long-term goal is for Satoru to become autonomous like other exploration projects, maintained by the community. The Satoru fam is growing strong, miindblowing how fast all the issues get snapped.
