Stablecoins are becoming the internet's dollar, and that shift is starting to reshape monetary sovereignty in high-inflation economies.
Our new report with Silicon Valley Bank looks at what is driving that shift, and how controls can keep pace as emerging market adoption scales.

The future of sport is about more than what happens on the court.🎾
In partnership with @NYAtlantics_, we’re exploring what’s next at the intersection of padel and technology, and what it means to be part of a changing sports landscape.
When most of a country’s financial activity already runs through its banks, it seems fair to expect new money rails to start there too.

Stablecoins Win Where Banking Is Weak, Not Where It Is Advanced
Panelists Arnold Lee (@0xdirichlet, @sphere_labs), Jason Ne Win (@meshpay) and Zaheer Ebtikar (@zaheerebtikar, @Plasma) discussed "Money That Moves: The Infrastructure Behind Stablecoin Payments."
Where do stablecoins actually beat the existing system?
Not where you would expect. Lee of Sphere Labs was direct: in the US and Europe, interbank networks are tightly connected and existing remittance already moves funds reasonably well, so the incremental benefit is limited. Between emerging markets, securing correspondent banks costs real time and real money. Using a stablecoin as the intermediary collapses one complicated cross-border transfer into two local transactions, local currency into stablecoin in the sending country and stablecoin back into local currency at the other end, with blockchain connecting two regional financial networks instead of a chain of correspondents.
Is this really about cheaper fees?
No, it is about the calendar. Ne Win of Mesh pointed out that traditional finance is bounded by national business days and time zones, while stablecoins transact on weekends and holidays, so capital turns over faster rather than just costing less. Running existing payment systems takes substantial headcount and expense, and stablecoins settle transparently around the clock without an organization of the same size. His framing: a stablecoin is not a separate virtual asset but a more advanced version of money, and eventually users will not realize they are using one.
What is the hidden cost nobody talks about?
Duplicated compliance. A single transaction can touch several institutions and payment providers, so the same KYC and enhanced due diligence runs again at every stage. Lee's proposal is to let one institution's verification result be shared with another while protecting personal data, keeping the strictest obligations at the points where stablecoins are exchanged for fiat.
Will one chain win all of this?
No. Ebtikar of Plasma ruled it out, because users and businesses need different transaction speeds, costs and regulatory conditions, which means purpose-built chains and services connecting multiple networks develop together. For retail users, which chain it is matters far less than whether money arrives faster and cheaper without complex KYC or a chain to choose.
So who leads the next three years?
Not the obvious candidates. The panel's call was that on-chain payments get led not by traditional banks and not by unregulated crypto firms, but by emerging-market fintechs holding some level of financial license.
And the sharpest consumer pitch came from Ne Win. Your online accounts and social media follow you when you move countries. Your bank accounts have to be closed and reopened every time. Financial accounts that travel with you is a better story than cheaper remittance.

Compliance is one of the most important functions in financial services. It’s also one of the most duplicated.

The margin on moving dollars in and out of stablecoins is down to single-digit basis points and dropping. Every other currency is headed the same way.
You can't build a company on that, so where is the opportunity?

A @BIS_org study has found that rising demand for dollar-backed #stablecoins can spill over into traditional foreign-exchange markets.
The study examined 4 major USD-pegged stablecoins across 27 fiat currencies between 2021 and 2025. It found that stronger stablecoin demand can put downward pressure on local currencies while increasing the cost of obtaining dollars through FX swaps.
The effects were more pronounced when financial intermediaries were already under stress.
“When citizens in high-inflation economies move from local currency into digital dollars, monetary transmission weakens, deposit bases erode, and pressure builds faster than central banks can respond.” - CEO, @sphere_labs

One API doesn't mean one system. Especially in cross-border payments.
MXN -> USD is our first fully in-house corridor, from collection through FX to payout. More to come.
Building on stablecoins? Your fiat rails should be first-class too.
Proud of our team. Build on Sphere.

🇲🇽🇺🇸 Stoked to publicly share an important route that we've been iteratively building for a while (MXN -> USD).
The coolest and most differentiated component to this release is that it's in-housed on both sides of the MXN/USD [collection->on-ramp (FX)->transfer->off-ramp->payout] — so that there are no extra 3rd party dependencies that will create random lag or unexpected RFIs in the cross-border payment.
We've always been frustrated by the nested dependencies that unexpectedly get created when stitching various 3rd party vendors together — as sometimes it works for your customers, and sometimes it doesn't. And, ironically, just like traditional correspondent banking, no one really seems to know what happened at any given moment.
There was a lot of unexpected work in getting the backend of this — especially on normalizing local compliance/risk operations — correct, but it's proven to be worth it for us and our users.
So we're excited to release this to the broader developer/integrator community, so that way you can have support for what is arguably the #1 cross-border trade route, globally, too. From Day 1.
🇲🇽 MXN ➡️ 🇺🇸 USD transfers are now live on the SpherePay API.
We handle the collection, conversion, and payout so you don't have to stitch rails together.
Your customer pays in pesos over SPEI. The beneficiary receives USD by domestic wire or SWIFT, with the rate locked upfront.

Our CEO @0xdirichlet joined @Plasma & @meshpay on stage at @0xEastPoint to talk stablecoin adoption and compliance.
Arnold's takeaways 👇
➡️ Stablecoins shine most in emerging market corridors, where correspondent banking networks have thinned
➡️ Stablecoin sandwich: one cross-border payment becomes two local ones, with regulated providers converting in and out of stablecoins on each end
➡️ Customers could be verified once and results shared securely across regulated institutions, with the strictest checks at the on and off ramps
