Climate change is increasing the severity and frequency of coral bleaching globally... but why do corals even bleach in the first place? Check out our paper proposing a new hypothesis for why corals bleach. 🧵1/5

New preprint up! We sequenced hundreds of samples from across one of Earth's oldest living organisms - the Pando aspen clone - to understand how mutations accumulate and spread in long-lived clonal organisms. Our results were…surprising. 1/30

Tonight I’ll be presenting on the molecular mechanisms behind flowering through SutS! Come by BFL to join in-person, or watch online. If you’re interested in how plants respond to warming temperatures (or an earnest attempt to make genetics cool), this is the talk for you.
🌿How do plants survive rising temperatures? While animals can travel, plants adapt by changing their gene expression! Join us on Oct. 10 at Brackenridge Field Lab as Maddie Brightbill dives into the fascinating topics of plant genetics & flowering 🌺

Very excited to share our new preprint from the Kirkpatrick and @arbelharpak labs!
Natural selection can act differently on females and males. How frequently does this happen in the human genome?

The Spawn Watch database is live and available for download!
As spawning timepoints and locations are shared from direct coral spawning observations we will have a more accurate picture of coral reproductive behavior.
Share your data, and download data shared by others!

How do microbial symbionts affect host responses to environmental variability?
Our new publication in @Ecology_Letters answers this question using amazing long-term data for grasses and their fungal symbionts. -> onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…

🚨New paper!!🚨
Ectotherms with high thermal tolerance are often less thermally plastic, potentially due to a fitness tradeoff
Just out in @FunEcology, we find that reproductive costs of thermal plasticity are greater in more thermally tolerant families

If this is true, we might expect reefs and/or taxa with higher recruitment to experience more bleaching. Little data exists to directly test this, but based on time- and taxa-averaged bleaching + recruitment tendencies, this seems to be the case: 4/5
