Our hearts are with those families affected by the tragic shooting in Bend, Oregon. Schools should be safe places where children can learn, play and grow without fear of violence. The mental and emotional toll of living in fear is especially profound for children. In moments like this, they may feel frightened or confused. Speaking calmly, listening to their feelings, and offering reassurance can help them feel safe and supported. Save the Children offers guidance for parents and caregivers on how to talk with children about traumatic events: bit.ly/3VCYPfD

NEWS: New Save the Children Global Ventures Investment in BluLever to Help More South African Youth Train for Skilled Trades and Secure Jobs As finance ministers, central bankers and development leaders meet this week in Bangkok for the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings, Save the Children Global Ventures (SCGV) has announced a new investment in BluLever Education. BluLever is a South African vocational training company that prepares young people for careers as plumbers, electricians, mechanics and solar technicians. The investment was made through SCGV’s Children’s Impact Multiplier Fund, and will support BluLever’s expansion to a second campus in Cape Town. This will help more young people from low-income households gain skills and well-paid work. “Good jobs are built on good foundations: first literacy and numeracy, then skills that employers value. Too many young Africans fall at that last step. BluLever pays young people to learn trades the market needs, such as plumbing, electrical work and solar installation. 88% of its graduates go on to work or further study, and more than a third of its apprentices are women, in trades where women are fewer than 3% of the workforce. That is how investment turns into opportunity,” said Paul Ronalds, CEO of SCGV Over the next decade, 1.2 billion young people in developing countries will reach working age, but only around 400 million jobs are projected for them, according to World Bank figures. “This investment helps us grow, starting with our new campus in Cape Town, where 90 employers have already signed letters of intent to host apprentices. Many young people want to work in the trades but have no way in. We look forward to working with Save the Children’s teams to reach more of them,” said Jess Roussos and Adam Collier, Co-Founders and Co-CEOs of BluLever. South Africa shows how big the gap has become, with official figures putting youth unemployment at 61% among 15- to 24-year-olds. At the same time, more than one in five employers say they struggle to recruit qualified artisans. For many young people, there is no clear path from school into work. BluLever was founded in 2019 and designs its programs with employers, so that graduates leave with the practical skills industries need. The organization offers the clear path from school into work - a qualification, an employer and a wage – with its three-year apprenticeship combining learning on campus with paid placements. Apprentices earn while they learn and graduate with real work experience. Of the BluLever graduates who have passed their trade test, 88% are employed or continuing their studies. Women make up 35% of its apprentices, in trades such as plumbing where fewer than 3% of workers are women. BluLever opened its first campus in Johannesburg in 2021 and plans to open its second in Cape Town later in 2026. In Rwanda, it is working with the Ministry of Education to create the country’s first formal qualification for plumbers. Alongside the investment, SCGV and BluLever see opportunities to work with Save the Children in South Africa to help more young people, particularly those from low-income households, move from training into decent work. BluLever Education is a South African vocational training company founded in 2019 with the mission of empowering Africa’s artisans with skills for the future. It offers accredited apprenticeships in plumbing, electrical and automotive trades, a solar technician program, short courses for working tradespeople and its Artisan Academy for informal artisan entrepreneurs.

NEWS: Save the Children Working to Help Florida Kids and Families Recover, Regain Stability in Wake of Destructive Hurricane Isaias As communities in the Florida Panhandle grapple with the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Isaias, Save the Children is continuing to meet the urgent and long-term needs of children and families whose lives have been upended by the devastating storm. Prior to landfall, the global humanitarian organization provided anticipatory cash assistance to help families with disabilities prepare for the storm, and is now turning its attention to deliver additional cash assistance and emergency supplies, while supporting childcare recovery. Isaias has left families facing widespread power outages, blocked roads, interrupted critical services, safety hazards from fallen trees, and impacted childcare centers, schools and playgrounds. As families face the uncertainty of recovery, Save the Children is collaborating with emergency, education and faith-based partners to: • Provide flexible cash assistance to help caregivers cover urgent expenses, including food, water, gas and temporary lodging. • Deliver critical child-focused supplies, such as diapers and wipes, to children and families who need them most. • Help childcare and early learning centers recover by working with childcare partners and affected providers to understand damage, address barriers to reopening and restoring essential services for children and hardworking families. "Helping families with disabilities prepare for Hurricane Isaias before the storm—providing cash assistance for critical essentials like medications, accessible transportation and temporary lodging — was a powerful reminder of how timely support can make a life-changing difference in a moment of uncertainty. Through our collaboration with Special Olympics and other disability-focused partners, we’ve already heard from families moved to tears by what this assistance meant to them at such a critical time,” said James Orlando, managing director of U.S. emergencies for Save the Children. “But days after the storm, our teams on the ground are still seeing the impacts, and the full extent of recovery needs is only beginning to emerge. Many families remain without power, under boil-water notices and uncertain about what comes next. Save the Children remains committed to standing alongside these families, their children and the educators who support them — providing urgent relief now and helping communities recover and rebuild in the weeks and months ahead.” To speed up and strengthen childcare supports after hurricanes and emergencies, Save the Children established the Gulf Coast Resilience Network in 2021 – a partnership of childcare networks in five hurricane prone states, including Florida. The global humanitarian organization supports the network through childcare emergency preparedness training, mental health supports for children and caregivers, and rapid assistance to help childcare centers recover and reopen after a disaster. Save the Children has been helping America’s children recover from major disasters for over 20 years, including Hurricanes Helene and Milton in 2024, as well as the devastating wildfires in Washington state and flooding in Hawaii earlier this year.

Three years ago today, 39 Israeli children were killed. In the ensuing war, more than 21,000 children in Gaza have been killed. Regardless of where they are, every child should be safe and protected from the consequences of conflict. Today, 1 in 8 children in Gaza are suffering chronic, long-term malnutrition and nearly all are displaced from their education with schools damaged or destroyed. Recently updated satellite imagery from Google Earth reveals the utter devastation. These are facts, not positions, and with each broken ceasefire, the world is failing these children. As yet another winter approaches, children must be put first. End the violence. Protect every child. Enact a permanent ceasefire now!
