Over 30% of trauma and emergency-related deaths in India occur due to delays in emergency response and pre-hospital care. Training police officers and other first responders in basic life-saving skills is therefore critical to strengthening the chain of survival that decides whether a road crash victim lives or dies.
Last month, our team was in Gorakhpur, one of the 100 districts that bear the greatest burden of road crashes in India, where the ZFD Programme is being implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways. With support from @TATAAIGIndia under its CSR initiative, we conducted Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS) and Sadak Suraksha Mitra (SSM) trainings for police officers and community volunteers, equipping first responders with the skills to act in the minutes that matter most after a crash.
In India's most populous state, SLF's scientific road safety interventions under the Zero Fatality District (ZFD) Programme have delivered a 10% statewide reduction in road crash fatalities for the period January to June 2026, compared with the same period in 2025. Encouraged by the results, the Uttar Pradesh government has now mandated the Programme across all 75 districts.
The ZFD Programme delivers a holistic suite of scientific interventions across the four Es of road safety, engineering, enforcement, education, and emergency care, to reduce road crash fatalities at scale.
We are grateful to District Administration, Gorakhpur, the Government of Uttar Pradesh, and TATA AIG for their support in our endeavours. SLF stands ready to extend all necessary support to further curb road crash fatalities in Uttar Pradesh and across India.

Maharashtra Government’s initiative to deepen the use of technology for improving road safety outcomes is an encouraging step forward. Technology, when combined with strong governance, enforcement and evidence-led decision-making, can significantly strengthen road safety efforts.
At @savelifeindia, technology has increasingly become an important force multiplier in our work. Data and dashboards help identify patterns and trends across road crashes, enabling authorities to move from responding to individual incidents to addressing systemic risks.
We have also used AI-trained cameras to identify traffic conflicts and near-misses at intersections, along with heatmaps to help identify high-risk locations and inform targeted interventions.
Several of these technological solutions form part of the holistic suite of interventions recommended under SLF’s Zero Fatality District (ZFD) Programme across India’s 100 highest-burden districts.
Recent experience from Nagpur (Rural) demonstrates the potential of combining data with effective enforcement. By using rigorous data analysis to identify blackspots and focusing enforcement on risky behaviours, the district recorded a 23% reduction in fatalities in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025.
The priority now should be to translate this momentum into action: strengthen data systems, deploy technology where it can have the greatest impact, integrate insights into enforcement and road engineering, and scale proven approaches across districts.
With Maharashtra leading this effort, technology can help make road safety interventions more targeted, measurable and, ultimately, more effective in saving lives.

A hit-and-run is the extreme end of a spectrum, one that starts much earlier, with behaviours we've normalised on our roads every single day.
The recent case in Gurugram, where a woman on a bike was chased and rammed by the driver of a four-wheeler, is a brutal reminder of how far enforcement still has to travel to build fear as well as respect for the law among road users.
Our CEO @piyushtewarii discusses the same with @sardesairajdeep on @IndiaToday. Listen in.

National crash data attributes a large share of India’s annual road crash fatalities to road user behaviour, with overspeeding alone accounting for nearly 70% of fatalities. Robust enforcement of traffic rules is crucial for building the perception among road users that rash and negligent driving will carry inescapable consequences.
Earlier this month, under Project Sanjeevani, Vertis Infrastructure Trust and @savelifeindia handed over 15 breath analysers to Hyderabad Traffic Police, equipping enforcement authorities to conduct swift, evidence-based screening for drunken driving.
Strengthening of preventive enforcement complements our parallel work under Project Sanjeevani to build a robust post-crash trauma care system, anchored in the chain of survival framework. With support from the Government of Telangana and Vertis Infrastructure Trust, this initiative is being implemented on the 251-kms NH-44 corridor connecting Hyderabad and Adilabad.

Seventy nine years ago, India won the right to govern itself.
Every year since has been about making that freedom real for every citizen, in ways the Constitution can actually enforce.
In 2024, India lost 1,77,175 people to road crashes. That is 485 lives every day, and close to 20 every hour. A majority of them were in the most productive years of their lives.
This is not fate. Road crashes are a systems problem, and systems can be redesigned.
This year, that principle found expression in law. In May 2026, the Supreme Court of India recognised timely trauma care as a fundamental right under Article 21 of our constitution, with binding directions to every State and Union Territory. A citizen's survival after a crash is no longer a matter of chance. It is a constitutional entitlement.
Working alongside the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, State governments and police forces, we are building the systems that turn that entitlement into everyday reality: Zero Fatality Districts, safer road engineering, evidence led enforcement, and post crash care measured in minutes rather than hours.
A Viksit Bharat cannot be built on roads that take 485 lives a day.
On India's 80th Independence Day, we recommit to a simple idea: Freedom must include the freedom to reach home safely.

The most dangerous sentence in the world? "This is how it's always been." At @savelifeindia, challenging the status quo has taken us through four transformative chapters over 18 years.
We refused to accept that bystanders wouldn't stop to help a crash victim — people's lived experiences didn't support the belief that Indians are indifferent to a stranger's suffering. We refused to accept the road 'accidents' terminology, choosing instead to see them as predictable 'crashes' that could be 'prevented' through a scientific, data-backed approach.
We're now into our most ambitious chapter yet: scaling the Zero Fatality Corridor (ZFC) and Zero Fatality District (ZFD) programmes, in partnership with the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, across 100 of India's highest-risk corridors and 100 highest-burden districts.
Because this work must outlive SaveLIFE. The impact will endure only if the scientific rigour we've championed — treating road crashes as systemic, preventable lapses — gets embedded in government systems.

#Exclusive: Following a personal tragedy, former investment executive Piyush Tewari founded SaveLIFE Foundation (SLF) to reform India’s transport safety ecosystem. By replacing traditional assumptions with data science, legal advocacy, and targeted engineering across sixteen states, SLF proves that road deaths are preventable system failures rather than unavoidable accidents.
👉🏼 Driving Data-Backed Reforms
India loses nearly 180,000 lives annually to road crashes. SLF secured landmark Good Samaritan legal protections and achieved a 55% fatality drop on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway by analysing detailed crash data. "By ensuring our roads are safer, you are actually guaranteeing people the right to life," Tewari affirmed.
👉🏼 Scaling Safety Nationwide
Expanding beyond expressways, SLF’s Zero Fatality District programme now collaborates with transport authorities and police to systematically fix hazardous black spots. Having saved an estimated 1,778 lives last year alone, SLF is scaling this data-driven framework across all 780 Indian districts and into Southeast Asia.
👉🏼 The Logical Indian's Perspective
Road safety is a fundamental human right, not a matter of luck. Eliminating road traffic deaths requires empathy, rigorous infrastructure planning, and unyielding public accountability. Safe journeys must be guaranteed for every citizen.@savelifeindia @piyushtewarii

Over 4.7 lakh people are injured on India’s roads every year. Many are left with crippling, sometimes permanent, disabilities that quietly erase their working years — India’s most valuable economic asset. Yet, India has no trauma registries to track them.
That's the gap the Supreme Court has addressed. In a landmark judgement, it declared the Right to Trauma Care an inalienable part of the Right to Life under Article 21, and mandated every state and UT to set up their own trauma registries and report compliance to the Court.
As our Founder & CEO @piyushtewarii put it in a recent interview with @umasudhir for @DeKoderAI: "This data gap has caused the science of road safety to remain stagnant."
Without trauma registries, we can't see the patterns — which injuries recur for certain types of collisions, which interventions work, where vehicle safety features fall short, etc. State registries linked to a national one would change that, turning trauma data into a tool policymakers, medical professionals, and the auto industry can actually act on.
This is just 1 of 9 time-bound directions in the judgement, all aimed at seamlessly integrating every link in the chain of survival, and making trauma care accountable to all of us.

Every day, nearly a hundred pedestrians step out of their homes but don't return. In 2024 alone, 36,526 pedestrians lost their lives to road crashes in India, a toll that has risen steadily over the years and falls hardest on lower-income communities, for whom walking is not a choice but a necessity.
That is why the Supreme Court's recent judgment recognising the right to walk on safe, demarcated footpaths as a fundamental right is a landmark step: it rightly expands the scope for what a life of dignity must guarantee every citizen.
As @savelifeindia Founder & CEO @piyushtewarii explains in this article, “For decades the footpath has been the most expendable line on road building and maintenance plans. By recognising the right to walk as a fundamental right that takes priority over motorised traffic, the Supreme Court has reversed that hierarchy, and rightly so. For municipal bodies and road-owning agencies, a safe, unobstructed footpath is no longer discretionary; it is a constitutional duty wherever a road exists."

When someone survives the crash itself, they deserve every chance to survive the minutes that follow. That is the principle India is now building its trauma care system around.
In a landmark judgment on a petition filed by @savelifeindia, the Supreme Court of India has recognised the Right to Trauma Care as part of the fundamental Right to Life under Article 21, and set out a clear, actionable path to strengthen every link in the chain of survival: a single, integrated emergency helpline through 112, trained paramedics on every ambulance, designation and grading of trauma centres based on their capabilities, grievance redressal mechanisms for Good Samaritans, and several other systemic measures to improve emergency trauma care across the country.
Our Founder and CEO, @piyushtewarii, spoke with @mdixitjagran of @JagranNews about the significance of this landmark judgment, its implications for trauma care in India, and why the Supreme Court’s decision to retain continuing jurisdiction over the matter is essential for ensuring effective implementation.

Can transforming our built environment induce positive behaviour change, even as we worry about the steady erosion of the social contract among road users?
This week, at @Uber_India's road safety forum, Uber Surakshit, our Founder & CEO, @piyushtewarii, emphasised that designing our streets and public spaces to suit users' specific needs can serve as a powerful behavioural nudge, encouraging responsible road use.
This has been clearly demonstrated in our work at @savelifeindia, where redesigning crash-prone intersections has significantly improved safety for all, especially for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists.
Piyush also shed light on how the role of technology has evolved from being an enabler to a multiplier. Our Zero Fatality Corridor (ZFC) and Zero Fatality District (ZFD) Programmes utilise comprehensive crash data analytics and predictive modelling to proactively allocate resources to crash-prone locations or blackspots.
All of this work is made possible by our partnerships with the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, several state governments, and district administrations. The consensus on the panel also stressed that the work to create a safer road ecosystem must happen at the intersection of behaviour change, technology, and public-private as well as cross-sector collaboration.

If you suffer a life-threatening injury, who do you call for help?
Who ensures that help arrives in time, is equipped and trained to save your life, extricates you safely if you’re trapped, takes you to the right trauma centre, not just the nearest health facility, and alerts that hospital before you arrive?
Until recently, these weren’t questions with settled answers.
On 26 May 2026, the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India changed that.
In a landmark judgment on a petition filed by @savelifeindia, the Court recognised timely #TraumaCare as an integral part of the Right to Life under Article 21 of India’s Constitution, and issued nine binding directions to all States and UTs to strengthen India’s emergency response system.
This article by our Founder and CEO, @piyushtewarii for @the_hindu, explores why the judgment is a watershed moment for trauma care and what it means for governments, emergency responders, healthcare providers, and every citizen.

"Road safety is one of the most critical conversations India needs to have today. As the country rapidly builds tech-driven infrastructure and modern mobility systems, safety has to remain at the centre of this transformation.
The urgency is clear. In 2024 alone, India lost nearly 450 lives every single day due to road crashes. Behind these numbers are families shattered, livelihoods impacted, and communities carrying the burden of preventable tragedies.
While infrastructure is improving, road safety cannot depend only on better roads. It needs smarter systems that can predict, prevent, and reduce risk in real time. This is where telematics plays a critical role.
Telematics allows us to understand driving behaviour, monitor speed, detect harsh braking, sudden acceleration, and identify risky patterns before they turn into accidents. It transforms road safety from being reactive to preventive.
The power of telematics lies in its ability to create awareness and accountability. When drivers receive real-time feedback, and stakeholders can analyse behaviour through data, safer habits begin to form.
India’s road safety challenge is large, but technology gives us an opportunity to address it at scale. As we continue to strengthen infrastructure, integrating telematics into the ecosystem can become one of the most effective tools in saving lives and building a safer mobility future."

"The Zero Fatality District Programme is an important step in rethinking how India approaches road safety. The larger idea is simple but powerful: road safety cannot remain a short-term project; it must become a government-backed programme with unified ownership, sustained funding, and long-term accountability.
Today, when a crash happens, the response often gets divided across multiple departments, different teams, and separate budgets. This fragmented approach slows action and weakens outcomes. What we are trying to do is bring road safety under one unified governance framework, where accountability is clear, and interventions are coordinated.
The encouraging part is that crash data collection in India has improved significantly over the past decade. With over 4.6 lakh accidents reported annually, the availability of better data gives us a stronger foundation than ever before. But the real question is not just collecting data; it is how we use it. How do we unlock existing systems, identify patterns, and turn insights into preventive action?
This is where training and capacity building become critical. Road safety is not just about roads or vehicles; it is about the entire machinery behind it. Police, transport officials, engineers, emergency responders, and local administrations all need to be trained to understand and act on road safety data effectively.
The good news is that the ecosystem is evolving. New mechanisms, better technology, and stronger governance models are beginning to show results. Data has improved, systems are improving, and the intent is there. The opportunity now is to connect these pieces together and build a road safety framework that does not just respond to accidents but works to prevent them altogether."
