Europe must have the power to shape artificial intelligence and ensure that its benefits reach society as a whole. This was the common message from our MEPs @sandrogozi @oagirregoitia @laurencefarreng during their interventions in the European Parliament’s plenary in Strasbourg on 22 October. Their contributions brought together three priorities: establishing effective global governance, developing Europe’s technological capabilities, and protecting the people whose work, rights and livelihoods are being transformed by AI. Our Secretary General @sandrogozi made it clear in the European Parliament: Europe cannot leave the future of AI to Washington and Beijing. We must lead the fight for a binding international AI treaty, with robust safety standards and effective human control. But we cannot shape the rules of tomorrow without the power to shape the technology itself. Europe must invest boldly in innovation, talent and European tech champions, and tear down the barriers holding back a genuine single market for AI. Europe must lead, not follow. Our MEP @EnginEroglu_FW called on the European Commission to change course: instead of demanding more money from Member States already under financial pressure, the EU must focus on restoring economic growth. That means reducing excessive regulation, extracting and processing our own raw materials in Europe, and giving businesses the conditions to innovate and grow. Europe must create wealth through growth and innovation, rather than relying on redistribution.

Riots in #France and other European countries have exposed a dangerous vulnerability: violence in the streets can be amplified online by foreign actors, extremist networks and opaque algorithms. The @FT investigation and Minister @jnbarrot ’s warning, reported by the Guardian, point to the same challenge: platforms cannot profit from virality while democracy pays the price. For the EDP, digital freedom needs democratic responsibility. Europe must act before manipulation becomes normal. Europe must defend democracy, online and offline.
