The Lachrymose Conception of Jewish History is reductive, misleading, in some respects simply wrong. But it sure beats the crack-pipe conception of Jewish history which animates right-of-Bibi Zionism today.

If history proves anything, it’s that the Jews and Israel will prevail.

The safest general characterisation of English historiography over the past 130 years is that it consists in a series of footnotes to Maitland.

What a beautiful piece. Even though the now 100 year old Mel Brooks recently did an interview your mention of Larry David experiencing “Yiddishkeit in its pomp” made me think how sad it is that one day comedians coloured in by this world will be almost entirely gone.

Is it so unreasonable to think there might be good reasons to pursue a PhD aside from getting an academic job?
Like, my profs in college in no way tried to dissuade me from pursuing a PhD in philosophy but even actively encouraged it, and this despite knowing the landscape concretely when I did not. This was, in hindsight, unethical and an abdication of one's responsibility as a mentor.

Anyway, given that AGI is coming for the ‘safer options’ too & nobody has the faintest idea what any job market, in academia or ‘industry’, will look like by the close of the decade, now seems as good a time as any to spend some time reading & thinking.

New article by me on Milton's prosody, and its reception in 19th-C scholarship. Arguing that the relationship between rule and deviation clouds distinctions of metrics as either material or ideal. Ends by suggesting there may be an ethical value therein. muse.jhu.edu/article/1007163

A few quick thoughts. 1. The most important issues were Iran and corruption. The corruption one is less discussed but it is ultimately more important. Corruption was guaranteed to torpedo both the populist coalition Trump built and the nationalist program he ran on.

I think this is relevant today. UK & US are very different places. We may share a language but I think this deceives on what else we share. UK has a European experience with its attendant experience of threats. US does not. I think their experience may be hubristic.

Please could you tell him to also follow me on Twitter?
The voters have spoken, and I want to extend my congratulations to James Talarico on his election to the U.S. Senate. I look forward to meeting him and offering my assistance with his transition as he prepares to serve Texans in the U.S. Senate.

I also really dislike the potential for such technology to pick up private conversations. We teach lots of students from countries under dictatorships and there are human rights issues here.
Colleagues at the University of Lincoln are right to fight against compulsory lecture recordings, and I wish we’d done it. The whole point of campus-based education is interaction with real human beings, in person and in real time. It’s simply irreplaceable.

To me, the intriguing aspect of the John Lewis advertisement is that grandma lives alone in a five-bedroom house within easy reach of a John Lewis.... whereas you couldn't film the ad in the children's flat, as it would be too small to accommodate the camera crew.

Can't believe they're trying to twee-ify "the London rickshaw", sorry but it ain't gonna happen!
Nope...not for me! 😠 This years John Lewis Christmas ad, in summary. Nan needs a hug, rude kids barge past her, ignoring her completely. Kids don't like Nans childhood presents, so Nan goes out shopping to John Lewis to buy things they like to placate them. Nan eventually gets her hug, when the spoilt grandkids get the presents they want. Oh, and a rickshaw ride round London for good measure! An absolutely dreadful story of kids attitudes towards the elderly today, and blatant consumerism - I for one, won't be shopping there this year! 🎁 🎅🎄

What happens if an MP is voted in by an overwhelming majority in their constituency, having been open and transparent with voters about their conviction during an election campaign, but then subsequently they fail this criminal record check and are denied a security pass?
EXCL: MPs and parliamentary staff could be required to take a criminal record check before being given a security pass, and receive anti-harassment training under a pioneering scheme to root out violence against women @peterwalker99 reports. theguardian.com/society/2026…

On the contrary, it's the trade presses who are adopting stringent anti-AI policies; all the academic presses I know have caved in one way or another
