Last week, San Francisco joined millions of people around the world for the Great ShakeOut, an annual earthquake preparedness drill that encourages individuals, schools, businesses, and communities to practice how to stay safe during an earthquake.
We gathered at Grattan Elementary School alongside Mayor Daniel Lurie, San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen, DEM Executive Director Mary Ellen Carroll, and SFUSD Superintendent Dr. Maria Su to highlight the importance of earthquake preparedness and practicing lifesaving safety actions.
When an earthquake strikes, remember to Drop, Cover, and Hold On:
•DROP to your hands and knees to prevent being knocked over.
•COVER your head and neck, and get under a sturdy table or desk if possible.
•HOLD ON to your shelter and stay in place until the shaking stops.
Preparedness doesn't end with a drill!

Prepare to stay at home with no utilities for about a week - start by storing at least one gallon of water per person, per day. Keep a battery-powered radio for updates if cell service is unavailable. We will use KCBS 740 AM / 106.9 FM to send emergency updates.
After shaking stops, check your surroundings. If your building is visibly unsafe, evacuate carefully to a nearby open space. Otherwise, shelter in place and avoid travel in the immediate aftermath of a damaging earthquake. Never re-enter a damaged building.
Preparedness is a partnership. Check in with your neighbors, friends, and family to talk about your plans today.
Sign up for emergency alerts by texting your ZIP Code to 888-777.

At 5:04pm on October 17, 1989, the Loma Prieta earthquake hit the Central Coast and Bay Area, causing widespread damage that killed 63 people and injured 3,757.
We remember the lives lost. We can honor the memory of that day by taking a step to prepare: secure a heavy item, refresh your supplies, and talk to your people about what you’ll do without cell service, water, or power.

Congratulations to our October 2026 Dispatcher of the Month, Stephanie Ramirez!
Stephanie was recognized for her outstanding work handling a 9-1-1 call involving a domestic violence incident.
Throughout the call, Stephanie remained calm and compassionate, reassuring the caller while asking thoughtful questions and gathering critical information to help responding officers.
Months later, one of the responding officers shared that a recording of Stephanie’s 9-1-1 call had been played during the suspect’s jury trial. The officer praised her thorough questioning and shared that the information the caller provided during the 9-1-1 call had essentially become her statement during the trial.
Dispatchers rarely get to see what happens after a 9-1-1 call ends. Stephanie’s story is a reminder of the lasting difference their work can make.
Please join us in congratulating Stephanie on this well-deserved recognition!

High tides today. A reminder to get ready for the season ahead. 🌊
The National Weather Service (NWS) Coastal Flood Advisory for San Francisco remains in effect until 3 p.m. today, Tuesday, October 13. High tide at the San Francisco gauge is forecast for 1:14 p.m.; timing varies along the shoreline.
If you’re heading to the waterfront, allow extra travel time. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Rising tides can cut off access to beaches and coastal areas.
Today’s advisory has an end time, but preparing for El Niño is a season-long effort. Higher ocean levels can worsen coastal flooding during high tides, even without a storm.
Rain, strong winds and power outages are also likely this winter.
Take one step to get ready today:
• Raise belongings off garage and basement floors in flood-prone areas.
• Check flashlights and batteries, and charge phones and portable chargers.
• Ask a neighbor what help they might need during a storm or outage.
Text your ZIP Code to 888-777 to sign up for emergency alerts. More preparedness tips at sf.gov/storms and the latest forecasts at weather.gov/mtr.
On October 13, 2006, Ordinance 261-06 took effect, merging the Department of Emergency Communications with the Office of Emergency Services.
The decision to create DEM made San Francisco one of just a few U.S. cities to unify police, fire, and medical 911 dispatch with emergency management in one department.
Our responsibilities have evolved significantly over the last 20 years, but our core mission has stayed the same: protecting life and property through everyday and not-so-everyday emergencies.
To our staff, past and present, and our partner agencies, community organizations and volunteers: thank you for showing up every day to keep people safe and prepared.
Take a look back with us. Then take a step today to prepare yourself, and your community for the next emergency.

Hear those warm ups? If your eyes are on the sky this weekend, make sure hearing protection is on your checklist.
Bring earplugs or earmuffs for the Fleet Week air show, and help children use hearing protection that fits. Protective earmuffs can be easier for young children to use than earplugs.
Remember to bring water, layers and a charged phone. sf.gov/FleetWeek
