On Oct 26, Ambassador Jihoon Cha of the Republic of Korea met with Chungnam Governor Park Soo-hyun. As Korea works toward an inclusive 'AI Basic Society,' local governments are introducing AI into the public sector to serve all citizens.
Highlighting international efforts to leave no one behind through the 'Global Dialogue on AI Governance,' Amb. Cha stressed the importance of local governments joining this shared mission.
On October 26, the Republic of Korea participated in the General Assmbly Plenary Debate on the "Use of the Veto".
We highlighted the following points:
The threat to peace does not disappear when a draft is blocked, and the Councilโs responsibility to address it remains. Therefore, the exercise of the veto calls for restraint commensurate with its consequences.
The prospect of a veto may substantially alter a draft or prevent it from being put to a vote at all, as Council deliberations have illustrated again this year. These constraints go unrecorded in veto statistics, yet may seriously impair the Councilโs ability to act.
General Assembly resolution 76/262, co-sponsored by the Republic of Korea, as well as the Franco-Mexican initiative and the ACT Code of Conduct, which Korea supports, share a common purpose: to ensure that the Councilโs authority is exercised in keeping with the responsibility entrusted to it under the Charter.
The Republic of Korea, for its part, will continue working with all Member States to advance these shared objectives and strengthen the United Nationsโ ability to maintain international peace and security.
On October 22, Ambassador Jong Kwon Youn, Deputy Permenant Representative of the Republic of Korea participated in the General Assmbly Plenary Debate on "Question of equitable representation on and increase in the membership of the Security Council and other matters related to the Security Council".
He reaffirmed Republic of Korea's commitment to a reform that enables the Council to deliver on its critical mandate of maintaining international peace and security. He also highlighted the following three points to make the Council more representative, accountable, democratic and effective.
First, the expansion of the elected, non-permanent category, including longer-term seats with the possibility of re-election, offers a practical way to build a Council that is both more representative and more accountable by broadening opportunities for all Member States.
Second, any expansion of the veto would undermine efforts to make the Council more democratic and effective.
Third, equitable geographical distribution is essential to making the Council more representative and inclusive.
๐ฐ๐ท๐ฐ๐ณ Proud to officially kick off our Co-Chair partnership for the Global Dialogue on AI Governance!
On Oct 22, Ambassador Jihoon Cha of the Republic of Korea and Ambassador Mutryce Williams of Saint Kitts and Nevis and the teams met to launch this joint effort.
