Last episode, the data gave the Fed room to wait on a second rate hike. This week’s inflation reports took most of that room away. In the latest Realpage Economy Express, Arben Skivjani, Deputy Chief Economist at Realpage, breaks down hotter consumer and producer prices, what the Fed’s minutes signal, an uneasy consumer, and what it means for apartment demand. Consumer prices climbed 3.7% from a year ago, and wholesale prices jumped 1.3% in a single month. Retail sales rose 0.8%, yet most of that was higher prices. If the Fed were deciding this week, would it hike again? The numbers behind its last move have mostly changed. In the latest Realpage Economy Express, Arben Skivjani, Deputy Chief Economist at Realpage, breaks down a jobs report that came in nearly flat, a rewrite of the Fed's preferred inflation gauge, an upgrade to growth, and what it means for apartment demand. Employers added just 29,000 jobs in September, and July slipped back to a loss. Growth was revised up to 2.2%, yet core PCE inflation was revised down to 3.0%. And mortgage rates hit 7.3%.
